I'm wondering about freediving clubs in the Santa Cruz or Monterey Area, also intermediate level freedive instruction. Comfortable 45-60 ft. 60 on a good day, (ate right the night before, ears good, etc.) I rarely dive outside my comfort zone so I don't know what my "max" would be, but the classes I've seen advertised seem to focus on beginning water skills, and I think I'm more of an intermediate diver. I'm also an experienced open water distance swimmer so that helps. Any clues?

Wally,

If you find a club or here of any instruction around you please let me know. I'm in the Scott's Valley area (Ben Lomond) and I've been looking for something like that for a few months but to no avail. It seems like there's plenty of scuba clubs with a few freedivers in them but no club around here specifically devoted to freediving. I've been freediving for about a year- so you're probably way more advanced than myself (the deepest I've been is probably 30-35 ft- and not for long). But if you're looking for someone to hit the water with- let me know. My email's rjmblueh20@yahoo.com.

Hey guys,

Clubs: I hear there is a spearo club in SC called the Kelpstalkers. I met a guy named Alan on the freedivelist who keeps threatening to introduce me to the members, but that has not happened yet. I know not if they do training or just poke fish with projectiles and then swap war stories once a month :]
Training Clinics: I have searched out the web and I found the LeMaster/Krack clinics and dates for Monterey. I hear from reading the freedivelist that this is an excellent course, with emphasis on safety, techniques to get deep, and ways to lenghten dive durations-again with safety being top priority. It starts in June 2001 and will take place Sat the 9th to Tues the 12th. There are 9 persons signed up (now including me) so far with a max of 16 persons per clinic. For prerequisites and more info, go to performancefreediving.com and click the clinics. Hey wally, count me in on the diving, I live just up the hill from you as well!

Aaron,

Finally checked my email and got your reply. I'm also signed-up for that freedive clinic in Monterey, so I'll see you there.

I'm going to do a bit of poking around the web and word-of-mouth stuff to try and find these kelpstalkers and see how active they are. What I'm really looking to do is find 3 or 4 guys who want to hit the water on a pretty regular basis (ie. in the Santa Cruz/Monterey area, 2 to 3 times a week) and do some spearfishing. Are you interested? May is pretty much already full on the weekends for me (weddings/visits/work, yada yada) but I can probably take off from work early once a week or so. I'd really like to start diving every weekend throughout the summer though.

Let me know if you're interested. If we can't find these kelpstalkers maybe we can get our own group together.

Later and see you in June,
Ron

Ron & Wally,

My April/May wknds are pretty booked as well, however, I can get time off during the week with a week(s) notice. What do you say guys? Ron-I emailed you my contact info. Pager is the most effective. Let me know

Respectfully,

Hey did you guys end up meeting up or diving in Monterey? I'm looking for some buddies to train with in that area and would like to find some.
