Freediving in Scapa Flow, Orkney

Hey guys, been a while since i posted on here as i have just moved to Orkney to work on a scuba diving boat in Scapa Flow. Fortunatley i got the chance to freedive some of the wrecks as well as scuba dive them.

I *think* i am the first person to freedive scapa (where the German Fleet lie in 20 - 45m of water - battleships, cruisers, destroyers, escorts) and if anyone wishes to join us, we can easily accomodate freedivers with a few spare spaces in July.

Hi Helen,

I have done several of the wrecks at the barriers on the way down to South Ronaldsay, but have never been out on a boat into the deeper wrecks in the middle of the flow. My friend Malcolm Corsie who used to live in Orkney first took me there...ooohhh.....about.....2000? It was great and we used to go back every year until we moved house and became slaves to DIY.

The wrecks we used to do were the two on the west side of the 3rd barrier and the one (or two?) on the east side of the second barrier. The deepest it gets is about 10m - so it is a fantastic place to bring new divers as well as old.

The Brough of Deerness seal cave is one of the best dives I have ever done - if you get there when the seals are in the cave and hide in the kelp they will swim out past you and miss you by inches.....

Orkney is great - you must love it there - we must go back one day.....sigh....

Now that does sound like a good idea

Ahh Ben, i presume the Ben who dives with Mark Wayt - he is the one who trained me at the start of the year!
