It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Maybe your friend is a closet apneist who was so smug because that was his PB?rofl
 
Was doing some breath holds yesterday sitting in the sun - been very slack and haven't done any for ages!

I ALWAYS find that my first breath hold is really weak, with each hold, I get better and better. For example, yesterday, my holds went:

1.20
2.00
3.00
3.20
3.35

I took between a minute and 2 minutes breathing between holds.

My first hold, 1.20 was pathetic! But seriously, I couldn't have gone longer, but with each of the next 2 holds, I was adding around a minute per hold which is huge!... is there any reason for the discrepancies? Or am i just odd? :D
 
There is nothing unusual about what you describe. It is standard practise for people to do 3 or 4 or more breath-holds before trying a long / maximum apnea. I don't know all the reasons but I know the first few apneas help start the Dive Response. Then it becomes easier to do longer apnea's until you start pushing your true limits. So don't worry, it is perfectly normal. For reference, my limit is about 6minutes but on my first hold I struggle to reach 2:30. Hope that helps.

It makes sense, i didn't know people did holds before going for a max attempt - I thought I was cheating somehow!
