How about using liquid air (~%O2, N2, He). A 5 pound canister would be small and hold the same as an 80 cubic foot tank. I'll take 10 pounds. It would still be small. I hear the technical problems have been solved, but is not yet ready for prime time.
Forget much of this deeper stuff. There's not much down there compared to the shallows and there is inherent danger. It's like speed and driving. Death follows us all through life. Sometimes it gets closer. At 150 miles an hour or 150 feet deep, death snuggles up and gives you a hug.
If I were a TV producer, I could think of many activities that could be done on recent wrecks... Hide and seek (human hunting), search for hidden loot (fake or real), scooter races and all kinds of other things.
By the way, it is market forces killing smaller shops, like all smaller businesses.
If you want good diver training, make them do some beach dives. Then it's not just another pool dive.
Remember, against stupidity, the Gods themselves, contend in vain. Do you expect a scuba instructor to do any better?

I was just finning along and saw this site, so I thought I'd reply. I have a big web site about diving (especially CA diving) at www.diver.net/seahunt. If you like reading about good dives (not resorts, boats or DM's), you might like it. There are a fair number of pics as well.
Enjoy the diving, seahunt
