Gearing up

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Too late- I already got rid of it.

If you go back and read through the threads you'll see that I cleaned it MANY times with MANY different products- I've been at this a little while and know how to clean a mask.

I've heard different reasons for it, and am not alone in having issues with OMER masks. Compare that to Cressi masks, who seem ready to go right out of the box, and it makes you wonder what's going on over there- I received a few PM's about it but that's another story.

Never had such issues with mask fogging in any other masks I have owned (Aqualung, Dacor, Cressisub, Atomic, Tabata, Mares, Scuapro, Technisub, etc.) like I have with my OMER's. In the past it was just a quick scrub with toothpaste and they were good to go- not so with any of the OMER's that I've owned- and I have had a few- Abyss, Alien, Bandit.

I'm not questioning your experience Jon. I know you've been around. Like I said, I've had great luck with mine. I've read the threads. The first sentence I was giving you crap is all. I would not insult you intentionally by any means.

I believe the theory that someone posted about the glass not being as smooth as other mask brands.

The thing I find most interesting is I stopped using 500 psi on my other masks because I kept getting streaks and could not get it OFF my mask evenly. The Alien is the only mask I have used it and had the great results. And leaving that thin film on the lens, like waxing a car.

If the micro mask was not so expensive I would get one. I did not like the Cressi masks I tried in FL. I have a sphera too, I need to use it more and get used to it. The last time I used it I felt nauseous.

Guys, there is a new player on the block and its name is the "Spetton Excell"!!! This is my new primary mask and I can't speak highly enough about it. Super comfy, super low volume, and with great field of vision.

Sphera's are like that- I get nauseous when I scuba dive with it but not when I freedive with it.

It reminds me a lot of diving with an AGA F.F. mask- because of the plastic lens. Great mask for depth, and going really fast with a monofin, but they scratch so easily that I've been through 7 or 8 in the past 7 years.:head It seems like you need to get a new one every season.

Cressi-sub's are like any other masks- they fit some faces but not others. I really like their Super Occhio, but it doesn't fit my melon head- which is why I bought an OMER Bandit. :blackeye

After owning an OMER Abyss, Picasso Nulla, and Cressi Super Occhio- which must all come out of the same mold- the only one I ever had an issue with when it came to fogging was the OMER. The others were good to go after only a single cleaning.

I've heard that it was the glass, the chemicals they used in the molding process, and the fact that they shipped everything out to China to have it made as reasons for this- not sure if any of them are the reasons why, just know that it happens.

Jon. I know you've been around.
Are you calling me a SLUT? rofl

Send on up Jim and we'll be glad to tell you if it's any good.

SLUT,
Maybe it is something in the silicone? The small bit of defog that holds just under the edge may be helping to control whatever it is that may leech onto the lens??

I also heard that it might be the release agent they used in the molding process.

I have the spetton excell and it is great it is very nice and very big field of view and i dont seem to have any problem with it fogging i really love it i dont think i would trade it for a differnt one if anyone wants to give it a run sometime just tell me ill let you wear it to see how you like it

Well guys as helpful as this was all i got out of this was that there are alot of masks that are great on some people and not-so-great on others...So the other thing that i got out of this is that i have to try different masks and see which ones i like the best

so im off the the dive shop, probally buy those booties and have a look around at some weight and stuff

What you missed in all of this was:

OMER fins= Good

OMER masks= Bad
rofl

Don't waste your money on scuba boots and open-heel fins. Get some 5mm socks and buy long fins right away- they can be used for anything.

Jon

Your local dive shop probably won't carry much in the way of a good low volume mask. You will want a dark skit on the mask, not clear. Finding the proper mask does take time to try on different masks.

The sniff test will show you if the size is right. Then press on the mask and pay attention to pressure points. Usually around the brow or bridge of the nose. Some masks dig into the bridge of my nose, some between my eyes and others not at all. It it is a little uncomfortable while trying it, it will be even worse under pressure and after wearing it for hours at a time.

Do you wear OMER underwear too?

roflroflrofl

Do you wear OMER underwear too?

roflroflrofl
:rcardTHEY DON'T MAKE UNDERWEAR! I already asked!

Wait, your dead to me, I don't hear you :naughty la la la la la la la la la

Then how do you explain all of this stuff you left on Scott's boat last time we went diving?

roflroflrofl

I'm not wearing that first one anymore. You two wouldn't keep your hands off me when I did.

If you get a weight belt- get a RUBBER one! Alot of those masks might be SCUBA masks. DON'T GET CLEAR!

A little more explanation on the sniff test, you may know. Put the mask on your face, do not put the strap on your head, let it hang loose. Sniff in through your nose and hold your breath. If it fits it will hold the pressure and stay on your face when you let go.

The reason a clear skirt is "bad", is the amount of light coming in from the sides. In scuba we recommend the clear for most divers, it causes less claustrophobic effect and is not as much of an issue while on the bottom. But snorkeling and freediving benefit from the dark skirt. The dark skirt helps cut down the glare and make it easier to see from the surface.

Yeah, I work in the diveshop where mike will/is buying his gear. Im going to try and shoot some business jims way though. We bought a snorkel, because in that case the gear differencial was small. Ive reccomneded a freediving mask for the same reasons as IL did. "Do you see me cup my mask when we go early in the morning? Thats because Im blocking out glare to see the fish from the surface." - Me talking to mike (waldo). Hes bought booties from the dive store. Mike can still buy freediving fins if he wants to, he just has to size them appropriately.

Thanks guys! I just wanted to let you all know that your a big help, and im looking forward to getting to be a better diver and to someday go out with you and just have a blast.

So tomorrow morning i am going out to buy a mask (if they have one that i think will work) and hopefully get out to spring lake. (30% chance of thunderstorms:rcard)

Thanks

Mike
