does anyone live near and or spear near germantown? All the lakes i've seen mentioned besides michigan are way out in the center of the state- 1-2 hours from my house... not exactly ideal driving time. i'd do it, but just wondering if there is any other lakes closer or people that live close to germantown??

I used to freedive in Lannon quarry quite a bit when I worked in a dive shop over there- also used to lifeguard there back in high school.
You can freedive there, but no spearfishing. Max depth is about 58', but there's some neat junk to see on the bottom- collapsed mining shack in 30' of water off the point. Train tacks along the bottom that lead from the rock crusher. You will need a dive flag there, and should also get a permit from the park so you don't get a ticket.
For spearing you're going to need to drive a little bit. Lots of lakes, not too far away from you, in Waukesha county to choose from.

I dont know where germantown is exactly, but Im a teenager too, and Im a LOT farther north than the other guys, pretty much smack dab in the middle of the state. If you have facebook you can join our group "Central Wisconsin Spearfishers" We co-ordinate events, and talk about stuff, a lot like on here. Winks, Waldo, and Fargus64, are all members of that "club".

What kind of permit? I thought that was a county park. If that is the case it would fall under the Public Trust Doctrine. If its just a park admission sticker then... nevermind
Oh okay Germantown, I feel really dumb considering that my sister used to live there. FOR ABOUT TWO YEARS, and apparently I didnt remember. Now granted, we arnt that close to germantown either. Some of the Waukesha parks require a dive permit to dive there. These include Lannon Quarry, Foxbrook and Nagawicka if you go off the beach by the boat house. Permits are for sale by the park office, or in some of the local dive shops. You need a separate one if you are teaching. We used to be able to get all of our students in under our instructor permits, but then they changed the rules about 15-20 years ago and required everyone to have one- more of a money maker that way.

There are plenty of lakes close to you. Moose Lake used to be the number one lake around to teach scuba classes in- until they sold Hasslinger's resort and went condo. You can still get in by boat access and it has lots of fish- and even a shipwreck. There's also Beaver lake, which has fish but you need to swim a ways to get to some deeper water. Pine Lake is awesome but you need a boat. Nagawicka is an easy entry if you have the permit- it's also a completely different lake since zebra mussels got in there since you can now see more than 3'. Just look on here for anything close that looks blue and jump in: Wisconsin Lakes Trophic State Index

I got certified for scuba at 14- the earliest they would certify you back then.
Then, went out to California to go to PADI college (2 month long instructor course taught at PADI headquarters) when I was 17- I turned 18 about a week before the course ended.
Times have really changed, as I have run plenty of third graders through Discover scuba classes since then. I know that PADI dropped all age requirements for a while and a guy I used to teach with got his son certified when he was 7 as a Jr. open water diver.

I really liked the teaching aspect, so I ended up going to college for that. I taught school for 12 years and am taking a break for a few years so I can stay at home and take care of my kids.
I don't teach scuba much anymore because commercial (salvage) jobs pay a lot better and my time to work is rather limited. I still keep up my ratings and might do more of it as my kids go off to school.

Yeah, I enjoy that aspect. I also help with the kayak classes we offer. Im new to that, but getting pretty good. As a beginer diver, I had aspirations toward underwater welding, but Im not so sure of that anymore. Its still in the back of my mind.
kayaking is a blast.
I got into as a result of dive trips- couldn't scuba dive on the last day of the trip under the old rules and would kayak instead.
I have a couple of boats and a kayaking drysuit to get out in winter time- in between the icebergs.
I've also been able to do kayaking trips up in the Apostle islands and out on Lake Michigan to surf the waves during storms.
Right now kayaking is pretty good around here with all of the no-wake rules in effect.
You need to come down to Madison next spring for Canoeacopia. I've worked it in the past and it's huge! It's kind of like a DEMA show for kayaking- except the general public gets invited.

Sweet. I get an awesome discount on wilderness yaks, so Im thinking about a 125 tsunami, or a 125 tarpon. Thing is with me leaving for hawaii in two years... is it really worth the investment. (I know, I cant believe Im saying it either...) Who knows, will post pics if it happens though.
