How big to black sea bass get? Do they get fat looking when they are really big?

Its hard to say for sure. Someone claimed a 562 pounder in California, but there are reports of fish to 800 pounds.

But they don't look as fat as GG, at least not until they are hung up.

Here are some links.

Carlos has a section in Last of the Bluewater Hunters about hunting them. There's a picture of Bob Stansberry with a near 500lber if my memory serves.

By pure coincidence been discussing on another forum about goliath grouper (Florida Jewfish). Confirmation of info in this thread that after they were overfished (some claim by commercial spearo's) there was a no kill law and now they've come back so strong they're becoming a pest species.

We should be so lucky over here.

Does go to show though that if you do it right things can be turned around.

Dave.

And recreational spearos, and commercial/recreational spearos (like me) and hook and liners, and dynamite fishermen, etc. Everybody did their part, but its funny, people usually seem to think it was the "other guy". GG were pretty much exterminated on the Florida East Coast and substantially reduced on the west coast, although I usually knew where a few were to be found.

Anybody know what did in the black sea bass?

Very nice video, Bill.

I think it was some of each- recreational spearfishermen and rod and reelers, and commercial fishermen.

That's what I've heard, too. Are most of them unconcerned enough to allow divers to get close? If so, it's pretty obvious why their numbers dropped.

Yes, its very easy to get within shooting range of almost all of them. A couple of years ago I was carrying a little mid-handled 50" gun and wondered if I could poke one. I over did it and got a scale on my tip.
