Hello all,
I'm a British expat, and have been living in Hong Kong close to a year now, teaching and indulging myself in my other hobby/obsession - wargaming. I'm 22 on Saturday, and looking for something more relaxing
As a kid I went on holiday to Spain and around the Med a lot with my rather old parents (who thought they deserved three or four holidays a year) so I've always been an avid snorkeler.
I love snorkelling more than anything, and although I understand the relaxing and euphoric action of floating across the surface, bobbing up and down, I was always the one to get under the surface for a closer look! Even when I'm doing laps in the swimming pool, I prefer to be submerged.
After going to Okinawa on holiday recently, my love for snorkelling was rekindled, and after poking around on the internet, I discovered 'freediving' - and more importantly, that I'm sort of already one of you guys! So here I am, ready for information overload!
It's difficult to say what experience I have, since I've been swimming all my life, but only discovered this apnea stuff recently. I can swim the length of a 50m swimming pool underwater, and I have dived to maybe close to 10m deep in the ocean.
I suppose that is unimportant, and what I expect to be bombarded with is safety and more safety! Feel free! I have done as much reading as possible regarding DCS, shallow water blackout, hypocapnia, cerebral hypoxia - so I understand the dangers, but more imporantly, I'm aware that all this reading still counts for very little when I'm out there and under. So I'm here to learn more and share experiences.
I'd also love to get involved with some training here in Hong Kong so that I can perform supervised dives and get some buddies to swim with. I was really shocked to find recently that my current friends are pretty rubbish swimmers, and dare not get under the surface. Still - we're all different. So, if there are any Hong Kong freedivers that I can tag along with, sign me up!
I look forward to getting to know you, and submerging myself entirely into this incredible experience. Humbly yours.
