Well done mate, less hours than us anglers have put in this year for nowt as well!!
There are some good bassing spots round where you were, reef on the right at the low water mark. Plugs and spinners plus low water worm baits for the flats. An old ex-spearfisher also told me a story of a 20lb+ blonde ray being speared at that very spot about 25 years ago in about 6 foot of water so you never know...
Don't you go diggin the sand up though, that's my little secret what's down there.

So who recognised the "Cup and Saucer" in Tom's trophy pic’s. As I was going down the beach at Leree I met Chris and Marcel who’d already been and swimming out I met Pete coming in. Pete said he'd seen a few small bass but as M has already said in his post vis was not too good.
I know the area quite well but hadn't quite allowed for such a dead neap and the swell was a bit stomach turning as soon as you got out to sea a bit. Worked the first weed bed but conditions were so bad I thought of packing it in. However as I moved on to the second bed there it was, 3 foot from the speartip the profile of a whopping great bass. Dark battleship grey, gold edged gill plates and a big amber eye. Must have made 8 lb and could have gone 10. My eyes, memory and general bodily functions are fine but for some reason the nerve impulse to my trigger finger only works at dead slow, as in positively snail like. Suffice to say that a half decent spearo would have had time to pick up a stone off the bottom and brain the fish, never mind shoot it. Afraid I am not that spearo and so was fishless again. Well at least the ones I’m missing are getting bigger.
Anyone know if Viagra can improve finger performance :naughty , though not sure if I can increase my dosage any higher.

. Did you actually fire? I failed to pull the trigger on my 3rd bass shot -- seemed unmissable, not sure what happened...maybe trying too long to get the perfect moment/shot. Perhaps the movement of the fish was hypnotic. I mentioned it to a v. experienced spearo & he said it occasionally happened to him too - just fail to pull the trigger. Odd.BTW are you still using your new 20mm rubber bands?
No didn't fire. Was still thinking about thinking about pulling the trigger when Mr Bass buggered off-ski. Joking aside in a few weeks time after I've caught a few fish I'll be much quicker and by August I'll be so deadly the fish will put up their fins and stringer themselves just by the threat of me firing at them. No way I would miss a sitter of a large bass once I'm "on form".
It's always the same at the start of the season, although I do seem to have been having an unusual run of bad luck lately. Suppose in truth there is an element of old age and slower reflexes creeping in. Still have been about 12 - 15 times for zero bass and even early season that's unusual.
Looking back to last year it was similar (but not quite as bad) but by August I had caught 40 odd bass and gave up shooting them, as I'd had enough.
Gave up on the 20mm mega bands. Great power and range but couldn't sort out the inaccuracy problem. Gone back to my last season 16mm bands and seem to hit most of what I shoot at, if I pull the trigger that is. Have ordered a new set (pair) of 16mm screw in bands and a looped 16mm band. Have read that the looped band is more powerful (longer total length than the pair) and reduces recoil (kick) by being under the line of the spear not parallel to it. Going to experiment and see if any of it is true.

I got their first - have been diving around there for some weeks now and managed to see some big ones earlier the day you bagged yours. :martial However my version of the story is I wanted to spare them for later but in reality the stealth skills are not what they are supposed to be and they zoomed out of range prompto but hopefully foxfish can help . I then dragged beardy along which was not difficult after your post but those viz tablets of yours are surely the buziness - I could not see anything bigger than a sandeel.:blackeye
Nice spot though but please put away those nasties as the week-end is looming.

Had a nice dive this morning.
Bit of a trek down the cliffs but soon out onto some nice rocks and then into the water. Bit sunny, bit cloudy which threw the light in the water.
Decided to go to a deep spot I like and see if there were any fish around. Tried to call a few people but ended up going solo (with my float).
Started to make aspettos - just short ones of about 45 seconds at 5m to get into the swing of things and was finding some nice patches of sand and kelp interspersed with some tall jap weed (sure it has a proper name ?!).
After a couple of dives I headed out to sea and away from the rocks but following what is a long finger of a reef pointing away from shore. I followed the weed edge making a few drops down to about 8m with 1:40 aspettos - on one of these dives and not too far from the shore I found myself listening to a flicker of a noise and then three large-ish mackerels zinged into view - I thought I'd have a go and aimed ahead of the nearest one (which was still a long way off) - shot the Mamba and thought I'd missed... but no I had a nice mackerel on the end of the line tying it into knots !
Carried on out and to deeper water - not too much current as it is a bit of a neap tide at the moment - and then dodging a few fours and eights on their way back. Dropped down on the way back in on the other side of the reef and a massive mullet came within inches of me - but more of a bass man so waited it out... but no other fish seen. Water still 10C....
Nice dive and that's the first mackerel I have ever shot !

Excellent Ed. You never cease to amaze (and impress) me. Never caught a mackerel on the spear, just about a million on the rods. Have seen a few mackerel when spearfishing over the last 40 years but they move soooo.... faaaaaast..... that I've never managed to get one. Never had a Mamba before, mind you and if there’s one little puppy that could match a mackerel for speed, it’s a mamba spear.
Out in the boat today to do an early tank on the deeper west coast banks for a big flatty. Did one drop on “secret corner” of the bank in 100 foot. Crappy vis, surprisingly strong tide (for a neap), a few sandeels, one lonely pollack and no flats. Change to plan 2. The north east coast Scallop Plan. Couple of tanks in 60 ft saw a pretty full box of large scallops. The meats and rows are super fat at present so pleased with the catch.
Back west to pull the 50 hooks set earlier, hopefully for some early bream. 15 dogfish later, that was a waste of time and bait. Change of plan 3. Down the point for a fish for mackerel and a bit of bottom dragging with the forlorn hope of a turbot. Couple of mackerel, a herring and a few launce later, it was time to call it a day.
Overall it was a nice day out with a little fishy reward and it certainly gave the boat and especially the engine a good early season work out.

PS Andy I have a couple of suits belonging to a mate who’s 5ft 8 ish and 13.5 stone wide. Won’t embarrass you by discussing your “width” on this forum but you can PM me if you like. Sure I could get you a suit for a “Try Dive”. However, if I were you I’d wait a bit ‘til it was warmer and but more importantly, there was more chance of seeing fish. Another month or so should do it.

That is amazing Ed, well done, excellent shooting. I have only seen a few mackerel & never shot one. Shot a few long nose though.

I guess the dive had a slightly amusing end? Unfortunately I lost one of my canine teeth when I was a teenager & wear a false one. I always take out my false tooth when diving because my snorkel bite desloges it anyway. After our dive while getting changed I somehow mislaid my falsie, I guessed it was in my van somewhere so decided to find it when I got home. After searching my van with no joy I returned to our dive spot, There it was in many pieces lying on the ground crushed by my wheel:vangry
