In again today up to the Banque Imbert.

New thing for today was a back weight type set up. Had 10lbs in that and 12 on the belt. At first it felt very odd as you assumed a more body down angle which meant finning without splashing on the surface (even with me ankle weights) was difficult, but my technique adapted itself and was soon stelthing along nicely. It definately helps get you down if you're going deep, having the extra weight below the water level drags you down, and you settle into a better position on the bottom too. Was also very comfortable, didn't notice it was there most of the time. So in summary, recommended for aspetto but the jury is out for playing at indians.

On to the dive. Viz wasn't great and the tide was utter pants, mid neap dropping. Mooched out around the reef, LOADS of mullet but no signs of bass. Got round the far side against the tide, looked around on the sand out from Bordeaux for a bit, heard the Condor come thundering past, cor that thing makes some noise! then turned back to let the tide tale me back where I'd come from. And thats when the fun started.

First up was a tiny little bass coming to have a look at me, can't have been more than 1/2lbs. Was far too sweet to shoot, even though I could have had it with a handspear.

Got back to the edge of the japweed and saw a decent bass to my left, but it spotted me and was off, within a minute I came upon a group of 4, straight ahead, selected the biggest, lined up, fired....missed...and me spear flew into the weed unattached :head.

Retreived it and swum to the nearest rock as the tide was pushing through. My line had parted just before the spear loop , very odd, tied it back on and was just getting my kit back on when I saw the swell coming...quickly realised the wake from the condor had arrived and knowing how it broke on the shore from fishing I decided the best place to be was in the water. Let it pass (and retreived my float from about 4m up on the rocks!) and got my head down again. Only now the viz had dropped from bad to useless! Bloney Vitesse!

And then I felt something odd with my eye, now me contact lens had only gone and popped out. Back to the rock I went, carefully took me mask off and found it stuck to the glass. 10mins later I had it back in :vangry and set off AGAIN.

Got back in the tide and let it carry me back towards my entry point, come up to a nice weed bed and stealthed my way through, when I saw another bass to my left (why always my left?) did the old gun rotating body straight thing but it pootled off so I follow it as slowly as I could, every now and then I'd see a glimpse of it thorugh the weed so it wasn't spooked and I was gaining....then it paused, lined it up, fired, and it was mine. Probably the longest successful shot I've taken for my smallest bass yet, would have been lucky to push 2lbs on a fat day, but I was happy with it.

One at a time is jsut fine and dandy by me :)

Had a nice day out in my boat on Sunday. Actually I expect that everyone who was out in a boat on Sunday had a good day. It was flat calm, sunny, no wind and dead neap tide. Went all over the place doing this and that. Diving, rod fishing, sun bathing etc.

Ended the day with a load of nice scallops, quite a few soles, a few plaice, loads of mackerel, several big male spiders and the first gurnard of the year. It was a very satisfying mixed catch with plenty of sea food for family and friends.

Only small downside is the millions of dogfish around at present that snaffle any baited hook you put near the sea bed and also no sign of any big flats ie turbot and brill on the inshore banks. Still it's early yet and this looks like a great start to the season

Dave :) .

Squillions!

We [Spicer, GBO, Myself and my wife] had a plan to get an evening dive in on the east coast — it was a nice idea. Spicer got there a bit early and went for a mooch. The shallows looked nice but the vis got bad very quickly, so we called it. Bit of a downer.

Karen and I came home but decided to go out for a night dive after all. As we came along Cobo I spotted a diver out on the rocks... one of you maybe?

We waited for dark, and X-factor, to finish then ventured out. It was a perfectly calm night. The shallows were crystal clear and the deeper water was just a little bloomed. Est. vis at 4-5m.

We saw no fish action until we came out after c. 45mins apart from a couple of small bass which I couldn't persuade to come home with me.

A Lady Crab [Velvet Swimming Crab] was a pleasant sight, as was a couple of small Chancre and a reasonable Spider. The Spider was female and had lost both of her claws. I didn't have the heart to bring her home. :)

Our highlight was seeing squillions of Baby Cuttles! [sorry, can't find a pic] I've seen them about before but singly and maybe a few times in a year. None were larger than my thumbnail. Most of them inked when approached. Lovely to see.

Hey ho. Time for be said Zebedee.

PS. Been asked to go free some lodged pots on the weekend. Looking forward to that - may score a Blue or two!

Couple of diverse questions for anyone who knows the answers:

Viz; when estimating viz is the distance quoted, say 4-5m, that past which you can see nothing or past which things get a bit blury?

Crabs; when taking spiders, or chancres or lobsters for that matter, is there an easy way to kill them or do you just leave them alive in the bag till its cooking time?

Flatties; any tips on spotting flatties in the sand? Is it not worthwhile looking for them on ridged sand? (because I presume a flat area amongst the ridges would be a bit of a give away) Any type of sand/gravel seem to be preferred?

Erm, think thats all for now. Cheers :)

Not sure what it's like to drag them round after you alive or dead in a net but if you want to eat them they should really be cooked alive (they do tend to protest at hot water but if you hold the lid on til they stop wriggling it's OK). My Dad used to cook and eat loads and swore by cooking them live as far as I can remember, same with my Grand dad. No idea what difference it makes, not one of my favorites.

Magpie my brother Derek would be a good man to ask about catching crabs & lobsters, he could also tell us all a thing or two about catching flatfish.
Where are you bro?
That is a good question about Viz. I dont know if there is a formula? But good, bad or s..t are the terms I use.

Sarah and myself were in at Port Grat today, neap high tide dropping, which was far from ideal but beggars, or more accurately those of us stuck at work, can't be choosers.

Long and the short of it was no bass seen, not even any mullet!

Came across a gill net by the long reef across the other side of the sand. Had no bass in it, lots of rockies though, a mackeral, a big pollack, a red gurnard, a fair few spiders, and a flattie of unknown type??? The net was nowhere near the sand so it must have been one of these rock dwelling flatties. Was fairly round and very dark coloured. Not massive, probably about a big hands span across. Topnot maybe?
I do despair at the randomness of those nets though, I presume all those rockies in it will be pot bait? I hope they get used for something not just chucked.

There were spiders everywhere as well, picked up 4 and the house currently smells like the market did all those years ago when I'd wander through after school. :)

I F%$*&ng hate gill nets; I cut them down wherever I come accross them. They kill everything and quite often are left for days and days without anyone attending to them. Also very dangerous for freediving spearos as you can't see them easily and could well get caught up in one. I'm pretty sure they're illegal in UK, not sure about Channel Islands though?

As regards keeping crabs alive til cooking---DO IT! Crabs store some of their nitrogenous waste in their tissues and the meat starts to break down very quickly when they die. If you kill the crabs long before they hit the pot, you run the risk of having them taste like a bottle of ammonia--nasty!!

Cheers foxfish b`day was good, spearfishing not so good during the day. Last saturday we must of had the entire dolphin population down on jsy`s southeast coast. Talk about being baron..... Having been night diving and getting quite a few sole and plaice, not much bass around yet.Hoping for better things this weekend. cioa

Went for a dive around the Ink Wells this evening. Vis was good 5-6m. Within a couple of minutes of entry we both missed the same Mullet :head

Both put in some nice deep dives out on the front (probably a PB for Chris?).

On one dive he got surprised by a bass popping out of the kelp in front of his face. It was quite funny to see his reaction from the surface :)

Barely any Spiders about. Saw just a few tiddlers and one female of size who came home with me.

As is often the case at the 'Wells, it was a bit of a washing machine. The wind had swung round to a NW and picked up quite a chop. Both of us found it uncomfortable - but at least it wasn't swelly, there's nothing worse.

Where are the Ink Wells Beardy? I know the crab wells to port soif, same place?

Anyway, off work today so went waaaay out west for the low tide to a spot I call the Bay of Plenty as it provided me with my first plug caught bass, and I have no reason to change its title following todays outing.

Set off with my nice new bullet weights strung round me waist, cheers OMD, just the job:wave. Didn't see much of anything for a while but my target location was still a way off. 3/4 hour later I was there and started working the weed. Within a few mins I saw the first bass, and nailed a nice long shot right behind the gills.

Got in a right old tangle again stringing it but suceeded in the end and continued. Soon saw another group of 4 bass, all a bit small though, 1-2lbs each and as I already had one over 2 I left them to it. Soon discovered they weren't alone, every 5m I'd come across another small group of schoolies. A slightly bigger one appeared, and joined his mate on my string.

Decided then to only go for real decent sized fish, if I saw any. And not 2 banks of weed later I ran straight into 2 proper sized fish, the bigger of the 2 came straight at me, clearly curious, so I gave him the bad news from no more than 2 feet kebabed between the eyes and out by the anal fins.

Lovely job! The bigger went 5lbs, the two smaller 2 1/2 each. Could have had double figures of fish between 1-2lbs if I'd wanted.

Think I'm getting the hang of this :)

Very nice hunt Magpie - The inkwells are the same spot at port soif. Very pretty. Unfortunately I have to sit in the office and watch the beautiful day pass slowly - pure torture:duh . Hope to get out tomorrow with beardy and bag some bass.

If that's a quick dive, what do you get on a long one?

Where (roughly) was that? Haven't seen a couches since last November, does that mean they are coming back already? Quite early.

Magpie that is a very good catch by anyone's standard. Ed that is a very good catch by anyone's standard.
For the last few years Couches have been almost as common as blacks especially around Grand Havre.
I hope to get in the water tomorrow, I have been to busy around the garden recently. Any how the good news is I have taken the plunge in a different way & brought a large metal smoke house. 6'x4'x6'. Should be here in a week or so. So soon I will be able to both cold smoke or hot smoke our catches.

I almost forgot, I also found time to make a high mass sleeve to fit my mamba. I have fitted a 1200 spear as well "I will tame the beast"

WTF is that!? I presume its to reduce recoil? Going to make it a bit harder to track with though (though horizontal would be ok, vertical wouldn't?)

Looks like a good job though, whats it made out of?

PS. Any need for the page 3 shot? :t
