Guernsey 2006

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.

The handle and muzzle are off my comanche Loops, as the mamba is on order I figured I could use them off my old gun. And I can still take them off, bolt them back to the 90 barrel an and off we go, 2 guns for the price of one sort of thing.

Thanks for the offer Foxy, but my new one should be here any day now.

My source told me that he was wearing a 5mm wetsuit with no gloves or boots, and had dried blood on his nose when he turned up at the hospital!!! And they bought it that he had been in the water 3 days!! If thats so he deserved to get away with it (IMHO)

what a comedian, as you boys very quickly spotted it sounded dodgy from the off. can't wait to hear the full story.

its the poor people who gave up their weekends with families and spent their time looking for him in fairly unpleasant conditions I feel sorry for. hopefully he will have the decency or be forced to pay for the costs of the search.

BTW - I though it was because you had breath like donkeys?

In for my second night dive last night, fully equiped with my new gun, new torch, not so new Ed and Sarah's wetsuit. 15mins and one trip home later to fetch mine off we went.

Firstly new 20wtorch was quality, lighting up the dark, secondly gun flotation was a bit heavy, but not too bad. When I get the shorter spear on it it will hopefully stop it being muzzle heavy and balance nicely.

First thing of interest seen was a small ray, the first I've seen in local waters, fishing or spearing. Probably undulate but I'm no expert on them. Quite a few small sole and plaice were followed by a takeable brill spiked by Ed.

More small ray followed, both undulate and blonde, all 1-2poundish in size I reckon, though i don't know, never having weighed one, they were all left to grow bigger.

A while later I saw the first Bass of the evening, only 1-2pounds and I was just trying to stop myself christening my gun on it when something red caught my eye. Turned out to be a nice 1lbs 5oz red mullet, which became the first capture of my night gun. :)

Another red mullet that didn't quite break a pound joined it soon after.

Then Ed shouted over, he'd found a John Dory. Not a massive one but great to see none the less. Massive dorsal fin, big spot, beautiful thing. It would always angle its body so we were only looking at it from above, getting the thin edge. Even diving down to it it would turn completely horizontal to the bottom. Wonderful thing.

I then followed another school bass for a while, hoping it would lead me to its mum, and witnessed it zoom up and grab a roselet before skulking off looking satisfied with itself! It obviously knew where the roselet was without seeing it as it was completely dark out of the torch beam.

All in all a very sucessful dive. Species count: Sole, Plaice, Brill, Undulate, Blonde, Red Mullet, Bass, John Dory and the usual Pollack, Roselet, Pout, Squid, Tuna, Blue Marlin....

P.S. No boat trips to the mainland were taken during the making of this dive.

Its french for Toad. I think they're called that because they only have toads over there, no frogs. We're donkeys, because we're hung like them ;)

Enough with the Guernsey Jersey thing, I’m supposed to be at work and people are walking past and want to know what I’m laughing at and I’ve only got so many answer’s.:) :)

PS NNNUUURRRRR bloody Scotsmen.rofl rofl

Sounds like good dive magpie and ed, I'm jealous, there's always next time

Was out sailing last night (didn't see any pods of dolphins with divers off fermain) Am involved with the regatta all weekend (actually racing not poncing about) so am scuppered for diving over the weekend on the low springs, please leave some flatties for me next week.

New spear arrived today. Unfortunately I fecked up!
I ordered a 75 spear, as it was for a 70ish gun, unfortunately I stupidly didn't realise that 75 was the spears actual length. So its too short :duh :head

Anyone got any interest in a brand new 75cm, 6.5mm, single barb Omer spear (its got a recess for the flopper so it sits inline with the spear not on top of it, nice little feature that). A swap for a 100cm (6mm preferably or 6.5mm) spear would be perfect!

(Foxy, I'll probably take you up on that loan offer in the meantime)

Thanks magpie, you guys here obviously speak from experience and it's appreciated.

My stuff has arrived! (but I just need some more stuff yet). I was thinking Dive Guernsey for "H" weights (prob 10Kg worth) and gloves? And stringers?

Have just tried the WS on (much to the amusement of my wife) but need sea trials which probably won't be this (V good it would seem) weekend unfortunately.

Again unfortunately,(unlike Sarnia) it all came flooding back and I did not need to get pulled of by my wife! :)

Trip - rubber weight belts are good - dont drop off when you go down etc

Can get a buckle from anywhere and the rubber from Interseals - they should be used to people asking now :)

Weights - I got 2 x big ones (4 pounds) and a couple of small ones (2 pounds) when I started but now use Dave's bullet weights. Better to be under weighted than over - if you exhale on the surface and sink then too much :(

Gloves - get them online or any ones from local shops. 3mm is ok for me.

Stringer - a length of mono tied through a centre hole of a stick type thing.... use anything to hand - I use a piece of stainless found while diving at Saints... others use other scrap bits of metal... etc

Good luck :)

Hi Trip and I assume the pulling off by wife was a reference to my earlier post?

Have now found out by going out with Foxfish that I don't need the wife for pulling off, just need to pull my beaver tail which is just as pleasurable!:D :naughty

Dave's bullet weights are no doubt more comfortable, but I have yet to try any, waiting to try his H weights once the conditions improve, hopefully this weekend.:D

Talking of stringers - I bought a Beuchat inox one from Squeaker but haven't sussed out the line yet - it came with a length of mono and some double crimp things. I read a thread going into great detail on how to crimp, flaring the ends etc - I assume it's meant to loop through the hole in the spike then be crimped, with a crimped loop at the other end? Although I notice a lot of people like OMD just use the standard green nylon twine that Mick sells by the mile - again would you just loop it, as obviously it's got to go through fishy gill and head parts( depending on preference)? This may sound like a silly question but how do you stop the line going through the fish at the other end? Anyone got any handy pics? I have been using a catch bag but I now see a stringer's better - especially as the bag's bright yellow!

Colin - I have a length of mono that has a small loop in one end and the other end is attached to the metal spike through the centre hole.

The end without the spike is attached just to the left of the buckle on my belt and then wraps around to the left and behind my waist, all the way around and then the spiky end fits in between the belt and the wetsuit in a friction hold.

So it is like a second belt.

I have found this to work for me - others make a short loop on one side and have the fish dangling from this.

I prefer to have a tight 'belt' that you can have the fish hard up along side.

Depends how you start off I guess... this is how I started so it seems natural for me :)

Last year I crimped the mono but this year I ran out so just overhand knotted the mono. Not much pull on the mono so crimps might be overkill ?

Anyway whatever you do tie it twice (ask Mart why :) ) ...

Good luck - sorry no pics but you hopefully can see what I mean ?!

Cheers
Ed
