Went out today to try the new stuff. Was all good but need more weight esp. ankle weights I think. Too much splashing from those fins (which are Seatec soft with Spetton pockets, Portinfer - they seem rather long and stiff to me but I used to have "jet" fins???) And you get the prize for guessing where the gear came from (thanks Dave if you're reading).

Also I tried 18lb using 14 as a start but still not enough for shallow work (I had the family on shore so not going far or deep) and definitely need some ankle weights.

Float too bloody big but that's my fault - at least it has a stowage hatch to keep your tickets dry!

Viz. was about 4-5M with the tide coming in - saw lots of small mullet and three largish wrasse but as I had already put the lamb on to slow roast, I let them be.

Nice picture. I came out just as you went in I think. About 3:00pm. I saw someone walking down the beach carrying a big float, I was at the top in a hurry getting half changed or else I would have come and said hello.

Good fun again isnt it? I'm just getting back into it after a lay off of a good few years. I've still got my jetfins and still use them when I tank dive.

went in for a dive yesterday on the low tide all around grand havre saw laods of fish but nerly all of them wernt any bigger than 9inches at the most did see a couple of bass took a shot at one but it was half a foot out of range unfortunately:head . also went arond some amazing kelp reefs that looked like fish hot spots but there were only the usal wrasse, wondered if the tide was too low
went home fishles but had a great dive tried looking for some flaties but couldent see any is ther any sighs you should look for??

Have to hand over my flatfish crown to Andy. :king .

Went in for 3 1/2 hours today, way way out west. Further out than I have ever swum from the shore. Was able to use the lee of some offshore reefs created by the extra big spring tide. Worked some gravel in about 25/30 foot with lots of dives looking for a turbot or brill though would have been happy with any flatfish. Total blank as in no fish (apart from a small ray that I left). Saw a couple of good bass including a sitter of about 6/7lb that I missed :duh . Also had a quick look shallow and in the "trigger fish reef" but apart from a big conger, a small lobby and a zillion wrasse result was again nothing to take home.

Despite no catch it was still a good dive with plenty of fish seen and I have a freezer full of fish anyway. Would have been nice to get a big tubby or brill though.

Walking? Or staggering? If so, that was me! (look like an extra in 50s B movie!)

It's great fun. Can't remember why I stopped now. . . Of course now the challenge is finding time - what with family, running, kayaking, and, oh yes work of course!

Went for a jolly yesterday on the low with Karen my wife. Despite the hassles of actually getting the water together it was nice to be out. Saw quite few smallish Mullet and bumped into to gangs of Garfish - which was nice. I had to try a shot at them, just for the chance of the prestige of actually hitting one. I blame the fact that I was using George's gun for both misses. ;)
Came home with a nice Mullet which went home with a friend who I met on the beach.

Went in at Cobo this afternoon on the wonderfully big low. Took a Latvian friend out for her first snorkel. She was a weirded out at first but chilled into it very quickly. We were out for over 2 hours in the end. Saw just a few silver fish (some small bass in the shallows on the way in) so came home with a nice wrasse for tea. She said she felt like the afternoon was a dream. I hoping we can get out on my cousin's jetski next week for her birthday... it's one of her life ambitions! :)

Met a nice chap on the beach who was keen to introduce his children to the wrasse. He said he used to dive in his teens so I suggested he dust off his gear and get onto the forum! Hope to see him soon.

Weather sounds like it's turning south again :(

Been thinking that deeperBlue should have a fish identification section. Do you think we should ask?

One alternative to a dedicated section on the site would be to start a new thread with each post being a couple of specimen mug shots and a write-up of info like; distribution, habits and habitats, diet, reproduction etc etc.

What d'ya fink??

Nice report as usual beardy, you could try out your ID idea but most fish we catch are heavily featured on this thread anyway. Do you mean a general fish guide including fish we dont hunt? In which case how we going to photo them if we dont kill them first, I guess a underwater camera?

Nice reports boys, damn jealous I couldn't get out now. Lost both games of cricket, which is actually good, because it means that thats the stupid game finished for the year now! Of course hockey has now started but that doesn't wipe out the whole day like cricket.

I've heard some more gossip on the "missing" diver. Apparently he went over to the UK to see his mistress, who he met on the internet, his wife knew he was going over there, and why, and reported him missing out of spite. It would explain a few things, but not why he took his diving gear with him :confused: . Anyway, just gossip as I say.

Yeah Foxy, something more general would be good. For instance, the other day I saw what I think was my first Stickleback - and could I find picktures and information when I got home?? Nope.

There's SO much life on our doorstep, and under our noses, I for one would love to know more about what I'm swimming over!

Sue Daly's website was an excellent effort in this direction but it has sadly fallen offline. Where are you Sue!?

I'm thinking of a Fish Wiki that everyone can add knowledge to.

Beardy, Fish ID is a good idea although the internet is already full of good ID resouces and photos. I find www.fishbase.org to be pretty good plus I have a couple of fish ID books that I use. I find that once you have the latin name you can google search on that with great results.

Photos would be useful highliting the differennces between species eg grey thick lipped and thin lipped mullet

I hought that Sticklebacks were only freshwater species, but looking in fishbase there is a sea stickleback (Spinachia spinachia)

I have some good sights but unfortunately the links are at home so will post later. Have some good books too if anyone ever wants to look things up.

Like the idea or a thread. Am thinking of buying a camera as is Mart and Ed. On saturday found a conger for Pete (Beetroute) to take pics of. He says he's going to post soon. New suit arrived today. Promptly got stuck in the body section with me arms above my head and suit stuck over head. Got it off eventually and then got link to instructions from Magpie. Much easier when you use your elbows...

was going to go with Magpie this PM but the sound of the weather with some real big rumbles of thunder and getting darker and darker put me off so I'm still at home and Tom is going alone. If you hear stories of man found in melted wetsuit with spear welded to hand North of Guernsey...:)

Well I survived, but so did all the fish. In at Fontenelle Bay, and saw mostly lots of murk, a couple of mullet, one smallish plaice, 4 cuttles and thats your lot.

Not a great dive.

I knew there were no fish up North. Fished in the day (high and low tide) up North the last few days with hardly a bite. Nice for you to confirm it though so I don't waste my tme tomorrow evening, best go South West with my customer then...

I did see those. Not had any fish in my casting range though. Didn't try the Lace though as the tides didn't match when I was fishing. Think it might not be a good idea to stay on the lace over a 10.3 high?! Was thinking of going tomorrow am down there.
