Seeing you mention longnose a funny thing happened to me Sat morn. I was out over the sand at the back of the Cup and Saucer when I saw this gar coming towards me so I lined up on him not to shoot when suddenly the little bugger darted towards me and bit the end of my spear (brave little sod) I think it was the barb fluttering as I turned that wound him up. Its the latest Ive dived and I found it amazing that the autumn fall on land was echoed so well under the waves too.Like others have said loads of rockies saw a gillnet and checked its full length only one plaice and a spider in it no wonder I didnt see a flattie as the net didnt produce either.

Longnose biting your spear! That a new one, the fish are revolting and starting to realise that attack is the best form of defence!

Sounds interesting Mart. Is it going to have a full cheek piece sort of thing or am I taking the rifle stock analogy too far? Should look good with the laminates, the match rifle stocks always look incredible.

Drove down west coast on my way home last night @ 7:00 the sea was glassy calm with the moon rising and I fully intended to go in, but as OMD would say 'life got in the way'
Cant go in tonight but intend to on wednesday and friday for sure if anyone wants to tag along?
HW is 9m @ 20:22 on weds and I have a niggle that this may be too high? If the viz is as it has been it will be great even just for the exercise. Much better for friday though.

Tom, I just meant the fore stock. Probably add some colour in the epoxy to contrast the white beach, most guns are laminated with only 3 thicknesses, seems to me 20 would look a lot nicer.

Mart thanks for the info on the viz. I thought that Derek had 'retired'? I would have thought a swim on a warm summer afternoon would be preferable to a chilly november evening. Did you catch anything?
On laminating I made a turned bowl out of laminated wood and used layers of cascophen with beech. I've also seen it done with blocks of dark and light wood, that can be very effective. Nice idea about staining the wood before lamination.
Just been out and about and stuck my head over the wall at Pembroke flat calm, but someone was on the beach with a long mono net :rcard I hate those things, they are indiscriminate as to what swims into them and gets caught. Saw a dead shag in one once :waterwork

Went in tonight at 5.30 which was half tide in Pembroke. Vis was better than I expected, a good 15+ foot. Slight swell and some bottom surge. Went out near the reef. Had to be a very short dive due to a mix up over baby sitting. I thought i wasn't. I was told I was.
Anyhow back to the dive. Swam out on the surface to about 10 or 12 foot and was just gonna start a few dives when I spotted something lit up on the bottom by my torch while I was still on the surface. Pretty sure what it was but as I dived to make the kill I was pleased to see that it was indeed a very nice brill. Not huge but a couple of pounds or so.
Thought I was gonna do well but turned out otherwise. Although I was only in 3/4 hour that was the only flatfish I saw. Didn't even see one 6 inch sole. None, nada, nothing. Have never been on a night dive and seen so little. No reds, no bass, no mullet, no plaice only the one brill, 2 scad and a few smelt. Good job the brill was a good one.
Swimming back in I came across a large mono net in about 15 ft of water. Probably was set at low tide from the shore. No fish in it but plenty of weed. Good job the weed was in it as it was hard to see. Everyone be careful. It's legal to net the bays this time of year so be vigilant - day or night- we don't want any accidents.

your comment about the nets is right, Mart and I came across a 30 metre net to the right of the Knife at the weekend. I would not like to come across one of these at night. It had no fish in but could certainly pose a danger, crazy idea allowing bays to be netted!

Do you not report the nets you see most of them are illegal. In torbay theres a speed boat wich wizzes around the bays with a ball with spikes on it that catches illegal pots and nets do you have one of these
. Also no trawlers get in as the big navy fisheries boat stays most of the summer.
Do you lot have nothing like this to stop illegal nets/pots

Not illegal between october-april over here spearheads, anyone can lay nets and trotts below the half tide mark.
It does worry me, quite often I'm mooching along the bottom, head down, and wouldn't have a clue there was a net there until I stumbled into it :rcard

Nets can be hard to see at times especially when they're new. Older nets and weedy nets aren't so bad. However all mono nets are very "snaggy". If you brush against them they snag on your knife, weight belt, watch, mask, gun etc. It's what the net is designed to do after all. So be very, very careful around nets.
Went in again tonight. Somewhere different with no nets. Wanted to make up for my enforced foreshortened dive and small catch yesterday. Certainly did make up for it and before anyone accuses me of being greedy I left an equal number of same size fish plus another half dozen smaller but legal fish. In my youth I probably would have loaded up with fish for the glory, although none of the fish would have gone to waste. Also you can sell surplus fish quite legally but as I am older (although not neccessarily wiser) I now prefer to leave a few (or a lot) for another day.

I got out tonight too! Miracle!
Soaked for 1h50m in the beautiful moonlit waters of Cobo - chosen for it's proximity to my shower!
Pulled 3 modest Bass. One of which was such a stoner — middle of the forehead from the front — that the fish just nosed into the sand with the weight of the spear and didn't flap once! (just a few seconds of vibration)
Saw a nice ray (too small) and even a baby conger. Lots of Little cuttles about, a few tiny squid, and a few diddy Chancres.
Very nice to be out again. T'was a very inshore dive due to the fact that I was flying solo. <lament>Where have all my buddies gone?</lament>

I was in yesterday afternoon, looking for the illusive razors. I went exactly where Andy had his the other day and do you know what I found? Jack all. Nothing.
Think I'm going to give up, not cut out to be a bivalve hunter.
Did some target practise with the mamba and it now seems to be down on power again, not getting to the end of 3 wraps, jsut pitching down into the sand.
Hey ho, was getting changed thinking that that might well be me done for the year as it was freezing (had been in for over 2 1/2 hours though!), but the flatfish king's pic might have put retirement on hold for a while!
