A report on another ( although again unsuccessful for me) interesting trip, yesterday, this time to the Humps on my old friend Rog( the Ginger Ninja)'s boat. Unfortunately, I had already arranged this when Foxfish offered to take me out on what also looked like a good trip to The Knife.
We arrived on the low tide and anchored in "the lagoon" at Gauvin. As we were in about 15-20ft, a bit of indecision about how to get in as I hadn't done it from a boat before, and I think you're meant to put the flippers on and go in backwards, going by Jacques Cousteau anyway! In the end did an ungainly flop from the boat's ladder, but it seemed to work OK.
Fantastic scenery - loads of tall thongweed and seagrass ( so Rog's botanist wife tells me) and closer in to the shore around the rocks on the left, thicker weed plus Japanese knotweed and a purple kale-looking stuff with bright blue iridescent spots on it - we think it's the kerrigeen (?) moss people ate during the Occupation.
Saw a large mullet in deep water silhouetted against the sunlight, just sitting there. Got a shot off but unfortunately my line tangled and the spear stopped short. Later on on the other side in very shallow water saw a good bass and some more decent sized mullet - got a shot at a few - yes I know, definitely need a longer gun. Thong weed very thick and almost impenetrable. People on the boat shouted at me not to go back to the right hand side as the tide had broken through the lagoon and I didn't fancy a trip to Alderney! Had to get out after 1 1/2 hrs as it was time to go - damn I was sure I would have got something!
Rog had got a 4-5lb mullet by hiding in the weed. His equipment was a small Beuchat band gun and a thin all in one wetsuit, no flippers! On the way back we lifted a pot Rog has just outside the harbour - had been there for a week. In it was a large rockie, still alive! The head was kindly cut off, and left with the guts in the pot for bait. I would have cut up the whole thing, but Rog thought it was big enough to try and eat.
Back for a barbie with mullet fillets and rockie goujons fried in Guernsey butter and herbs. Very tasty! I think the mullet was a thick lip as there were no gold spots. They looked darker than usual in the water. Photo attached though not very clear.
