Yes, as I suspected the south has had too much weather this week. Pembroke would be sheltered and is usually good vis if not exactly exciting. Will have a look mid afternoon and Phone/Post.

Had a look down west. lots of swell and green looking. Still might be okay but Pembroke looked better. Looked East coast and was flat but vis is always dodgy east.
Long story - but think i'll try good old Pembroke. Carpark opposite Golf Club at 7.45 for a 8.00 dive. If it's okay that's good, if it's crap go home at 8.05.

Look forward to meeting you guys for a chat around the fire. I will supply some food but it ain't a dinner party, especially considering it is only me doing the catering! (my partner is otherwise occupied) Still you wont go home hungry. Beer, wine or whatever would be apreated.

I will go to the fish market friday to make sure that Sarnian arrives with some fish on Sat!!!:t Make sure you feed him as unfortunately I am going to miss your feast as I will be in Birmingham (spear fishing capital of the world) feeding 1000 delegates!! Hope you have a great time make sure the old man doesn't drink too much as he has to take no.2 son to hockey for 915am Sun.:hungover Have fun and can somebody impart some usefull info to Sarnia on how to see the fish to spear them!!!

Hi crazy, what time do you finish work? Low tide is not until 7.12pm, it won't be easy to find fish at half tide going down. I cant think of anywhere I would go at that state of tide. You can come diving with me when my ears are better if you would like to?

Well we went in tonight. Me, Andy and Magpie. Some idiot had suggested Pembroke. It was Andy's first night dive but boy did he come equiped. A UKD8 torch whith dual bulbs one of them 30Watts!!!!!! Unfortunately that bulb had blown and he had to make do with the 18watt second bulb. As it turned out he would've needed a second world war searchlight to see through the crap vis. Oh! and my gun trigger broke leaving me with effectively a hand spear
I headed out deeper to see if it would improve. In the 20 odd night dives I've done vis has always been good. Often it has been exceptional and always better than you would expect for the sea conditions. Tonight despite the minimal swell it was dirty right down to 25 foot. You could see 6 even 8 foot in places but the bottom was surging and some places had about 3 foot viz - dire.
As we had a short meeting treading water I commented that you'd have to land on a fish to see it. 10 minutes later I nearly did. On a dive in 25 foot i found a bit of settled bottom and better vis and spotted a big section of pale oval seabed off to my right. BIG sole! No mistake, used my unloaded gun to handspear it in the head and slipped my hand under it with the last of my breath hold before kicking for the surface. Got Andy to come over and "light me up" so I could string it. Later back on shore Tom weighed it at 3lb 9oz, nice one.
Despite the nice sole conditions were not encouraging and we started back. In about 6 - 8 foot I saw a nice red mullet. With no working gun I held the torch steady on the fish and looked up for help. Great, nearby was a torch beam heading my way. As the light settled on the fish I wondered which of the boys it was. Time passed with no shot. I angled my torch trying to see why without blinding Andy or Tom, whichever it was. I could see 2 hands and no gun. What the fu!!!!!!K. I swung my torch a bit more. There in the beam was a tank diver with all the kit. Well that surprised me but what he did next amazed me. He tried to pick up my red mullet.
.Bloody idiot. What was he doing? Well Mr red mullet wasn't going to hang around to find out and did an "Elvis has left the building" impression. Nowhere was he to be seen. Mr Scuba just wanders off while I am left wondering wether it would be legal to shoot him. However came to my senses when I remembered my gun wasn't working.
Well every night dive is an adventure but this one was just plain weird. Still Andy said he enjoyed it and Tom and I promised that it could only get better. Plus of course the old man kept his flatfish crown .

Did you know dover sole is an aphrodisiac? Its the girlfriend's favourite fish. Seems I might get lucky :inlove
The torch is a long term investment, looking forward to the next night dive.
Really enjoyed the dive apart from the crap viz and the swell. Never mind can only get better.

Yep, as Dave says mate it'll only get better.
For myself I came upon 2 small bass, one of which was in viz so bad I had to swim along it to see how big it was, the tail was closer than the end of my short gun but I couldn't see the head, and it was only about a foot long. Thats how bad the viz was.
Other than that, and getting spooked by a biggish mullet that came flying straight into my torch beam and max knots, that was it.
Oh, I did see a huge sole, but it was on Dave's string and after the diver incident I don't think he'd have laughed if I shot it and tried to claim it!
Thanks for the thread Foxy, I'll have a read later on. First thought is Air Arms used to do a recoiless airgun, the TX200SR. It had the action mounted on a sledge which moved half an inch to absorb the recoil. Another "recoiless" gun had two counter acting springs which fired in opposition to each other to cancel out the recoil.
