Hi Foxfish how's it going with you down on the island won't be long now and we will be down to cause madness for you! Totally off the subject but I was wondering I've just boiled a 5lbs spider crab how much meat would you hope to get ? I got 7 oz of white meat !is it me ? Its a lot of smelly messy work for little return?.and it was a southern Cornish spider crab ?If I bother again what should I look for apart from the biggest male encrusted one I can get ?

I am not sure what the average yield would be but it is a lot more than 7oz LOL
After boiling, pull off the shell & cut the body in half from head to tail, wash under running water, remove all legs & then extract the white meat from the leg sockets in the crabs main body. there is loads of meat here, the rest is in the claws & legs.

Um thats basiclly what I did the body contents are ......um not for the faint harted i` d say. but gills pulled of and sockets strippped of every bit of meat every limb picked out and blown through it must just be luck of the draw ! I try and go for old looking crabs that have filled the shells with meat so to speak not fresh clean looking ones. Thats what I was lead to beleave were full of water till they have grown into them?Take it they moult and breed onece a year?

ian to make it worthwhile get a whole bunch. its not worth the effort for one imo.
we are fortunate that at the moment you could get an army of spiders in one dive. still not worth the effort for me tho.

I'm thinking that way now Jonny I had a fight with that one in the water and in the kitchen I'm not taking any more less the as big as me !What are the conditions like down on the islands it horrible up here on the Llyn .Hope for calmer weather for next weekend.Have you manage to get in much?

Most Guernsey people would tell you spiders are the best thing to come out of the sea, delicious to eat (just don't overcook) a 5lb spider is a big one for sure!

The effort can be changed around into a fun & traditional Guernsey lunch, a platter full of legs & body sockets, everybody picks their own & is eaten with buttered bread & condiments.

I am with u Martyn. Cooked perfectly, a big male spider crab is fabulous (I prefer them over 3lb and the bigger the better) . The leg meat comes out in one lump, the claw meat is so sweet . Spider crab has got to be one of my favourite meals and is a great way to celebrate the start of another summer. Usually accompanied with Jersey Royal new potatoes, French bread, and of course, a bottle of chilled white wine !

...and we all know how to improve the taste of Jersey Royals.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Velvet swimming crabs yet. Catch a couple big ones, cook them up and mix the meat in with the meat from a spider crab. It's a taste sensation!

We call them Lady crabs & you are now talking really fiddly to pick.... some folk eat the soft ones fried whole!
Guernsey Used to have a restricted season for collecting lady crabs but I think that may no longer apply?

They are fiddly to clean, but they have such a strong flavour I think it's worth it. I'm not sure about eating a fried whole one though :yack.

There are only 36 more days to go, then we'll be over with you guys. :fridayWe're arriving on the 1st Aug and doing some sightseeing, so we might pop up and say "Hi".

my new float arrived - just in time for an early morning dip today.

Wow, clonkers Jonny! 9lbs?

Got in for the first time in ages yesterday, off in the kayak after a few scallops and some mackerel on the way.

Only managed 2 fish on the rod on the way out, but one of them was a 6lbs bass!

Got to the dive site and found the bottom covered in weed where it’s normally pretty barren sand. Unfortunately this made finding the little buggers pretty problematic so I only managed to find 8.

And more concerning, after an hour or so one of my ears started ringing. No pain though and was still equalising fine so carried on. Later on when I was done diving I paddled to shore to pack the kayak for the trip back and on stepping onto the beach I promptly fell over? It seemed my eyes took a few second to catch up to where my head was pointing! Very wobbly legged I packed up and felt ok when back in the boat.

Managed a couple more mackerel on the way back but again on getting out I felt very dizzy and almost nauseous when on dry land. The ringing in my ear persisted and I’ve clearly done some damage in there somewhere.

Later on the high pitched hearing started going in that ear but the dizziness and ringing subsided. This morning I’m left with it feeling like its got water in it and the hearing a little bit off, but the dizziness and ringing has as good as gone. At no point have I had any pain. So now I’m wondering whether to leave it fix itself or whether I should go pay money to a GP who’ll tell me to leave it fix itself?

Diving's out for a while anyway, just as the weather settles, great! I wasn’t even going deep, 10-11m at most.

One was just under 9 and the other about 8 Tom. both had whole mackerel in their gullet, part digested - i think that upped the weight a bit lol.

Well done on a nice mixed bag catch :)
take it easy with the ear! punctured ear drum? worth a trip to the doc i would think...

hmmmm, so thats where all the bass have gone! ;) TJ if you are bored and looking to do lots of kayak fishing let me know as im getting into kayak fishing but need a few pointers, and given the current weather and sea state id like to be on or in the water as much as possible.

Nice catches guys, float looks good Jonny, especially with the 2 fat bass sat on top :)
I was looking at going out tomorrow but the winds are looking pretty high....will wait and see what happens

Bit random this one boys but what bait would you use for prawns in a prawn pot/trap ? And do they only come out at night to feed ?saw dozens of sausage sized ones fri night so poped two prawn traps in 7.30 this morn checked then on way out 4 hrs later no prawns but 20 crabs 3fish and 2 small lobster! Emptied them and left them over night to see whats in them in morn ?baited them with mullet heads and scaps.
