Day or night works, virtually any fish based bait but keep the traps off the bottom, I hang mine from my boat mooring.

um prawns swim out up in to open water to find food would you beleave it.thought the bass would have them !

So any of you have an idea how many ormer hooks a skilled craftsman could make in a day? (Assuming they're not made out of fiberglass or carbon fibers at this point.)

About thirty I would say.

Up to a hundred if he really tried I reckon, its just a bit of bent and flattened steel usually with a loop on the end, nothing complicated about it.

Thanks. Is the entire thing the metal? My sense from that old picture I found is that they're a small hook of metal bound to a (presumably) wooden staff. Did I get that right? Can the length of the staff vary, or can the staff even be optional and the hook just hand held?

The hook is made from iron & about 12-15'' long with a ring one end & a flattened hook the other.

So is the ring just to be able to tie things around it or put one's finger through it to cary it easily?

Also, is the hook blunt, sharp, or does it vary?

just got back from taking my two prawn traps out !well i didnt have to get wet as they were about a foot above the water ! Would of been great sucess if crabs i was after 37 crabs 1 edible 14 blennys 5 and half prawns !try a floating pot next time im down!this isnt going to be the biggest prawn buttie !

Yep you need to keep the pots off the bottom to avoid the crabs, if the traps are made from mesh, the crabs will just claw their way into the pot eventually.
If you have a nearby marina then hang the traps just under the pontoons.
Otherwise you need a more specialist trap made from metal mesh & with a very small entrance.

I need to get a go pro! Ever watch the scene in monty python and the Holy grail where john Cleese aka the dark Knight gets all his arms and legs popped off? Well met the lobster equivalent today, stuck my head in a hole and this little lobster with no claws came charging out and started ramming my mask, have at you! Attitude or what! Anyway nice weekend of diving, plenty of time on the water, lots of fish seen and 2 nice bass this evening

TEAM EVENTS AT FISH IN?

With Martyn's permission................. posting an idea.

Jersey boys are volunteering to sponsor a (small!) trophy to introduce a team element to the "fish in". Same rules , as the normal Fish in, but instead of just an individual winning there cld also be a team effort.

Jsy are hopefully bringing six divers, I am sure Guernsey will match that? At least that number are coming from UK ( not forgetting bonnie Scotland!) what do you think? Adds even more fun?


Jsy happy to organise team aspect.

Hey jonny sorry I missed your post, I was down rocquaine doing my pots on the kayak, definitely up for meeting up for some dives, and have yet to do the east coast so very keen.

Thanks foxfish will get one on the ferry if they have them ?Another random question for you i have a 9.25x9.25 3 blade prop on my 9.9 hp honda outboard .How much difference would a 9.25 x 8 pitch prop make will it help getting up on the plane ?

not nececellery. depends on the weight of the boat and max speed too. if you go for less pitch you might rpm limit at top speed. less pitch will help if you get serious cavitation/ventilation or thrust collapse at low speed/pre-planing.
if you can shift your weight forward then that can help get on the plane a bit quicker... hard to say without more info.
