So hot off the back of yesterday's freediving tutorial, who's up for a trip to Vobster quay for a SSI level 2 course with Emma Farrel?

Well up for it, if I can do it over a weekend so go Friday evening and back Sunday evening without taking holiday I'd be ok.
What would your hold time need to be under water to do this course? I might need a winter of out of water apnea training and do a course in April/may next year when I'm likely to get a better free dive experience

Hi all! No breath hold time needed to do the course. We take each student as they come and work with you individually at your own pace. Vobster is just an incredible place to dive with tons to explore underwater. We've got two courses left in the UK this year (Sept 13/14 and Oct 11/12) and would love to see you there! We took some footage this weekend and I've just posted it here

course comes in three packages but I guess you'll already have the gear so will go for the bronze package. This includes the course, certification and card, any kit hire needed (except wetsuit), pool fees and the level 1 pack (manual, log book, dvd etc). Bronze is either 374 for members or 399 for non members (membership is £55 and includes T-shirt, beanie, discounts on courses, kit and training, freediving insurance and a few other things). If there were four of you then I'd discount it to 374 without you having to buy membership and if five or more then I'd bring it down fifty quid pp to 349!

If you order stuff from apnea can you claim the vat/gst tax back from them, seems odd they didn't deduct it automatically when they saw order was to guernsey

Just spoke to Neil at Apnea before I read your post. They do not charge gst because their annual turnover is not enough. They do however get charged gst when they import their stock but not allowed to pass it on to customers

I just had a message from Apneaboy - Steve who was here last weekend - he has let me know that he can run a course for us if we want - he is based in Manchester so there are direct flights.

Was thinking about some of my bad shots recently.... and thinking about it my cord on my beuchat Marlin 90cm is quite hard to pull down to the trigger, i may have lost a small amount over the last couple years then shortening the overall length of cord, not loads but a bit, this is probably having a pretty negative effect when shooting.
Cant find anything that tells me what length it should be so what are the rules for replacing cord and ensuring you have right amount of pressure to pull down over trigger?

Shooting line can make a big difference to the guns performance!
There are quite a few choices for the material too...
The guys who compete in target shooting competitions use very thin dyneema to reduce the considerable drag the line causes in the water & in turn improves trajectory and spear speed...
Unfortunately Dyneema tends to tangle, especially with very thin lines but lots of spearos use it.
With any low stretch line or braid you need a bungee to help attach the line to the release & absorb the shock when the spear pull the line tight at the end of its flight.
Most spearos use mono in the 100lb to 200lb range, with the more stretchy lower diameter mono you don't need a bungee but with the most popular mid range size 150-175lb a bungee is still required.
