Harsh vs. gentle CO2 table

I have been wondering about CO2 levels as well; when pool training I usually work with fins at a breath interval which depends on the length of the pool, either 50M or 25M.

On a 25M pool I don't train CO2 with underwater swimming--I like doing sets of 100M crawl, breathing every 9 strokes (my normal is every 3 or 5) with a full exhale at each flipturn, intensity at the upper end of medium. Ten seconds rest between each 100. My exercise intensity on this set is too high to experience any MDR but as far as CO2 and lactic build-up it REALLY works for me. The constant turns make it harder; the set is much easier for me in a 50M pool. I have been using this set for a warm-up, afterwards I move into lower intensity work that is more apnea.

With a 50M pool, dynamic lengths full lung or FRC with a 4-5 breath interval (very slow and very deep) seem to work well for me. I worked that this last weekend and felt like I was getting a decent CO2 build-up, but also a certain amount of hypoxia; my training partner left so I didn't push too far. I want to work up to doing 100M dynamic laps, I think I am about to that point but even though I am training in a pool with a lifeguard I don't always have a training partner in the water, and for schedule reasons mostly train in a shallow 25M pool. I do very little full lung apnea training in a the 25M pool--mostly exhale laps with one inhale/exhale between each length.

I am planning to get a pulse O2 meter this next week so I can check levels when training. I am growing curious as to the different sensations--what is related to low O2 vs high CO2.

Like others on here have mentioned, I do much better with warm-up; the beginning of the workout is the most difficult/uncomfortable for me and it *feels* (again why I want to check in with a pulse O2 meter) progressively easier until the lactic acid build-up begins to interfere. Or I just get too cold. Once I am warmed up and relaxed my pulse rate is very low.

Any tips on using an oxymeter?
 
I'm using the:

'no apnea preparation',
'very slow breathing',
'MDR pause',
'Low intensity swimming'.

I have not developed the best levels of these parts yet, but I feel I'm onto something that works and feels great. Before Easter I nearly hit a very old PB (6,5 Years) with this approach, quite unexpectedly under not ideal circumstances. (DNF 106m , pb 2005 = 111m)

I must say that it appears to me that the balance of the 'breathe up' seems delicate. Hyperventilation of any kind (too deep or fast) will compromise the feel and the relaxation a big regard. Still I need to mentally focus not to speed up my final breaths, and to take my time for the final inhale.
When the preparation is good, then comes the slow start, again I need to break my old habit of starting fast. I need to go down slow and find a comfortable position and perform a little static to allow the MDR to establish.
Then I push off gently and start swimming in a fluid style, avoiding tension, avoiding my HR to rise. I dive noseclip only, and keep my eyes nearly closed, looking through my eyelashes.
At the firsts 25m turn I keep relaxed, make a slow turn and avoid tension, even my push off is rather soft. My coach commented I should be more streamlined, and gain more flexibility to be able to streamline without tension.
Normally the CO2 discomfort and contractions start after about 35 - 40m for me, but somehow I was not hit by this until about 65m, and then is was much softer and smoothly - easy to handle. BTW after 50 I started to swim faster. The mind felt also a bit more clear and at peace, instead of the 'fighting' and dullness I normally face after 50m.
The 106 DNF was after 2'20" and was near but no samba. It was a pity I had not recorded the dive with a HR monitor, I would love to compare different approaches. And also compare them to my mathematically beautiful static HR graph :)

If anyone has A HR monitor, I would love to see your DYN, DNF and STA graphs! (Both for FRC and Full lungs).

Yes, I agree final breathing pattern is very important. I tend to like slow purge breaths as part of my recovery breathing but I find the set will be much more comfortable if in no less than the last 10 or 15 seconds before the apnea I relax my breathing to the point that I am barely moving any air through my lungs. When doing dynamic sets with breath interval I am greedy with the few breaths I allow myself (very deep purges) but I keep these very slow to try and maintain my relaxed rythym. For more challenging dynamic sets that involve greater distances I should probably go with an interval of time as opposed to breath. While spearing in the ocean though this breathing pattern is not always possible but deeper dives are more comfortable if I force myself to start the dive slow. I also have an urge speed up at the end of a difficult dynamic (especially full lung) but I try to go slow as I feel like it is a panic response.

I think April 5th, late afternoon. After tiresome previous day, and playing with children in the yakuzy. Nice way warm up.

The dive was full lungs with a some of packing, though my packing skills are below par these days. - I Have to work on that.
My goal is to unite the advantages of FRC with full lung diving. It has been an interesting journey so far with some accidental observations cumulating into ideas and a profound new insight. I'm in the process of testing for the best way while my and other's experiences are confirming my thesis on how a part of the MDR works.
When I got more certainty I'll make another YouTube how to video.

Great insight from all of you. I will surely enjoy looking more thoroughly into it and experimenting with it. Of course any interesting discoveries will be shared in here. :)

And Kars, great video! I've seen it before, but it still makes me feel what freediving is all about, and I'm looking forward to the day I find my own flow.

Ah others have their PB in minutes, Kars has them in years :D (just joking, I know what you mean)

Very interesting thread so far. Kars, when you did your last dive, did you do it with full lungs (packing?)?
Nice observation! I guess I've still got a way to go. :)
