Hi all,

I am very new to the scene of free diving and spearfishing. I have found a crew of begginers to spearfish with which is great! We are all learning quickly and are starting to have great results. I am 38 years old and have surfed most of my life. I just have a few begginers questions to clarify.

1) I can hold my breath for 3 minutes 30 sec on dry land. Unfortunately once i hit the water and dive my time reduces to 30 seconds or so at about 5 to 10m depth. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2) The only few times i have felt like i could stay underwater longer is after the 30 seconds or so i have chest butterfly's (heart butterfly's?). It lasts a couple of beats, then my heart rate slows right down and i feel i can stay under for a long time. The only problem is i dont know if the chest butterfly's are meant to happen or not. Due to this i decide to accend as a precaution.

Thanks for your help

Sam

These are premature ventricular contractions (PVC's) also known as heart palpitations. They are not that uncommon while freediving. There is no danger unless you have heart conditions or blood pressure issues on land.

To improve your dives, make sure that you remain 1000% motionless for 2 minutes prior to starting each dive. Not a single muscle can move, not even a finger. Don't fight the waves, let the body be a ragdoll. If you are forced to move a muscle, the 2 minute countdown starts from the beginning again.

Thanks for the reply. I will research everything you said and implement them in my next dive! I already feel much better!
