Hello all from Cornwall, UK...

Hi all, thought this'd be a good place for my first post.

I'm just getting into spearfishing and live near Truro / Falmouth Cornwall. Have been messing around snorkeling and generally exploring around in the local area for a couple of years but am only just acquiring all the kit I need catch my first fish.

Picture below is of my finest underwater moment yet - a hefty lady lobster off Castle beach, Falmouth summer 2012. Scared me to death when I saw her lumbering towards me on the bottom! She went back to breed, was a bit too majestic for the pot.

At the time I was using my homemade tire inner tube weight belt and veg knife 'dive knife'. Have now got myself a proper weight belt, lead, smb, knife and speargun so looking forward to catching my first fish.

Welcome to DB, that's a mighty fine lobby, remember a lobster will shoot its claws to escape the hands of a predator, this one must have really liked the one he had!!

I didn't know lobsters drop claws as a defence, I'll hold them on the carapace from now on. Not sure i would have been able to land her if she had two claws, she chopped my noose / tickler stick (GRP tent pole) in half as it was! Her claw was like those hydraulic croppers the fire service use to open up cars the way it mangled my kit! The claw it did have had quite a few punctures in it so i guess she might have been fighting?

Yep, deeperblue is a great forum, i've found answers to so many questions already.

Been out five or so times since christmas and there aren't many fish around. A wee bit nippy too! Looking forward to things warming up and meeting everyone on the Cornwall thread.

Yes, I'm hoping to bump into her again this year, she's fairly distinctive having the one claw and numerous battle scars I noted. Not sure if lobsters return to the same spot each year?

You are in Hawaii - the lobsters your way don't have claws right? And no need for a wet suit? I was out twice over the weekend and only lasted 30mins each time before my hands went numb!

Cheers Trelawney, that's great to hear re: the season getting underway soon. I've never dived as much as I have done recently at this time of year and am amazed at how few fish I've seen compared to the summer months. Trying to get my practice in so I'm ready for them! Can't wait to bag my first fish!
