Hi there everyone!
My names Paul and i am preparing to enter the world of UK spearfishing.
I lived in Japan for a long while where i wetted my appetite for this fantastic sport and now i'm here in the UK, i'm getting all the necessary equipment ready to start.
I would really appreciate help from anyone in regards to the sort of wetsuit needed here.
I am looking at cressi camouskin but 5mm or 7mm?

Any help would be most appreciated

hello Paul, welcome to DB. 5mm should be fine, i wear mine all year round. most spearfishing suits are two piece so doubles up on thickness around the stomach and chest area anyway, if you did feel the cold in the colder months you could buy a 2mm vest to go underneath. also 5mm obviously have better manoeuvrability due the suit being thiner.

The decision has been made. 5mm it is.

The suit i have looked at is a Two-piece but has low waist pants with an aquastop seal
Spearfishing Wetsuits
Apart from looking a right plonker in camouflage do you think this will be ok? If so, great.

If not, I have looked at a second (Cressi competition 2) which has 'long-john' bottoms.

Hello Paul , welcome to db .
I had one of the original Cressi competition's , the thing is almost indestructible , lasting five seasons and still not dead , a very good suit to begin with for the knocks and scrapes you'll get .
Don't know much about the other one , except to say not to worry about the camouflage too much , IMHO , it's not really necessary .
What is important though is that the suit fits properly , and ideally you need to try it on before buying .
So I suppose the only useful advice I can give is , get the one which fits the best .

I would have to agree with devondave, I've had a cressi competition and it took loads of abuse, well made and durable. As for the camo suit I have sneaky suspicion that it may have a smooth skin exterior (could be wrong), which tends to be a bit easier to damage if poking about on jagged reefs.

Durability is something i hadn't thought about and agree it is key.

With any luck I will be all set to go by March!

Finally, I live in London and would like to meet/join experienced people to start with. I have family in Bude, Cornwall, so suspect i'd start near there but i have also been told the south coast is good.

Can anybody advise the best way to meet people to dive with??

best bet is to introduce yourself on the cornwall thread if your after a diving buddy, nice bunch of blokes they will be happy to lend a hand. alternatively if your ever around my neck of the woods give us a shout on the south devon thread, there are a few of us that regularly go.
