Hi all! My name is Matt. I've been SCUBA Diving for 17 years. I'm rated as a PADI Master Diver, NSS-CDS Full Cave, TDI Advanced Trimix, DCBC Unrestricted Surface Supplied Diver, ADCI Commercial Diver. I haven't taken any freediving courses yet. I've been spearfishing for about 3 years now. I've been freediving for about 4 months.

Welcome to Deeperblue! Sounds like you have all kinds of training and experience. How are you enjoying freediving thus far? It must be quite a different experience after all your scuba training.

Thanks for the welcome @Stephan Whelan and @BatRay . I'm loving freediving so far. It is insanely different from SCUBA and Surface-Supplied/Hard Hat diving. I feel naked when I'm freediving or doing pool work! Dealing with a bit of a problem currently though.

I quit smoking the same day I started freediving, and the cilia in my lungs have started purging all the gunk and build up and healing my lungs, but it's caused a productive cough and post-nasal drip, and has KILLED my hold times. I've gone from a 2:57 dry static to where 1:00 is met with severe burning in the lungs and a contraction that almost doubles me in half. This started Wednesday. There's also a new anxiety/dread feeling when the contractions and burning starts. I dunno what's up or how long this will last.

Ugh, that sounds unpleasant. Hopefully it won't last long. It may be helpful to peruse the Beginner Freediving subforum and see if anyone has had the same problem. You could post a question if you don't find what you're looking for.

Do you plan to take a course at some point? They're invaluable in terms of technique and the safety concerns that are unique to freediving.

@BatRay , I'm definitely taking a course sometime between July 30th and August 18th (Semester Break). I can't decide between PFI or FFI. Andrew Quincoses down at Nautilus Spearfishing has been helping me out a bunch lately, and he's an expert spearfisherman, so he can focus more on the hunting aspects of freediving. He's a FFI Level 1 Instructor, and I'd really like to give him my business, but I also want to take the best course I can. I'm trying to stay in Florida.
