Greetings,
I am a college student in NYC who loves photography, surfing and of course freediving. Im looking to get into spearfishing. Mostly Dive in the dominican republic but want to dive in NYC as well but conditions suck

Greetings, and welcome to Deeperblue. There's a wealth of information on this forum, so feel free to look around and ask questions. How often to you get to dive?

I dive in the summer, and everyday of my winter vacation somewhere tropical but that's only 2 weeks. I am a competitive swimmer so I do get a lot of practice and pool time 4-5 days a week.
Concerning spearfishing, I don't know how to start in terms of what fish to catch.

At least you get some water time. Regarding fish, it depends on where you're spearfishing. Each area usually has rules and regulations.

Im curious about whats safe to eat and what to avoid, in the Caribbean, mostly Dominican republic, where could I find that?
In DR most of the fish are good to eat, personaly just avoid to eat barracuda and big amberjack, particulary in south of island, but main of the fish are good to eat here, prefer to buy fish directly from fisherman, and avoid fish market, you wont be sick because of ciguatera but because of the fish is not fresh, they don't manage well the cold chain here, it is a pity, get your own fish much better!
