I hear RI is amazing but since I'm new to the sport I figured I'd try some local spots just to get some experience under my belt. I'm looking to get some stripers out of the deal. I know some local spots have blackfish but can't get to those until October. I'm really itching to get a striper in front of me. How far from the beach do you guys think the stripers may be?
I don't have a dive buddy so I'm kind of cautious in venturing too far out, but it's not that bad on the LI Sound. Do you guys have any suggestions.

I hear Crane's Neck and Old Field Point are good areas to check out but there's no access to this points other than a boat. I also hear that Stony Brook is a good area as well but not sure where to access some good spots. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Hey buddy I live & work in New York (upper east side) so my only spearfishing here is recalling found memories from my time in the persian gulf while staring at the brown east river... I might go on to explore long island next week or the week after... Any advise as where to start?
RI is a better place to start off.
1.. Its clear water
2.. every were you look out the car window there is a dive spot!
3.. you can shoot black fish (aka Tautog)
Black fish are not very challenging to shoot until they get pretty big but are good fun, good practice and reeealy good to eat.
Oh and 4.. super safe and freindly diving. Boats seem to be more aware what a dive flag it up there. Also there are alot of divers so easy to find a buddy

This is true, you'll probably have a better experience in RI. On long island people with boats are careless and access to dive spots are very few. Here's a link to some site if you're looking to explore LI The Long Island, New York Beach Diving Guide for scuba divers.
I'm going to try and get to RI myself hopefully one weekend this year if my wife to be wants to take the trip. Make sure you check out the rules and regulations as far as size limits and season for black fish. For LI, black fish season is not until October.
