I am a 16 year old (as of today) from NC. I swim competitively and would like to increase my breath holding ability and distance underwater.

I've been working on a 75 yard DNF (without knowing the technical term for it) for a while now and made it to about 64 a couple days ago. My dry static apnea best is 3:10. I am a total beginner and have not done any training, so I am open to suggestions.

I used to hyperventilate in order to increase my ability, but after learning of it's dangers I want to learn ways to get better without resorting to that.

Those are very respectable numbers. Have you searched for classes in your area? Classes are the optimal way to learn proper technique and safety. Until then, get familiar with techniques and terms. The Beginning Freediver subforum is a good place to start. The search function is also useful if you're looking for a specific subject or term. The forums have many years' worth of knowledge from experienced freedivers, some of whom are world-class. Lots of good information here.
