I am brand new to Freediving and had a question. I am a fairly big guy, 6' tall and 190lbs, most of this is muscle mass since my BMI is only 18.5 percent, but does being a larger guy put me at any disadvantage as far as freediving goes? I would like to think no, and I am still going to do this even if I get 2000 replies saying "yes it does" but I just wanted to know.

Welcome to Deeper Blue Seth,
Mate being a big un won’t give you any trouble at all, most of the guys I dive with have got more than one chin along with a slight forward waistline.
You get on in there and enjoy every minute.

Welcome Seth,

No need to worry about BMI, freediving is ideal for getting in shape.
Being tall is really an advantage in Free Immersion and the No Fins disciplines.

As you already may have discovered, this forum contains a huge amount of information, still I recommend doing a freediving course. This will give you a jump start and save you months and even years of trial and error and the associated dangers of that. Finding an educated freediving buddy is a great way to start!

In my opinion it's key to start freediving with a recreational approach. Where the goal is relaxation, technique and fun. While doing this you'll gain an improved physique and mindset. Personal Best (PB's) will come with a steady flow, but I'll advice to be satisfied with small ones, this way you'll have many parties, and have to tread your freediving buddy many times too :P

Have a nice journey of discovery, use the Deeperblue search option and I'm sure you'll quickly find many of the answers to your questions.

Love, Courage and Water,

Kars
