I remember flying out of Hong Kong with a buddy post 911 and seeing a little kid howling with anguish as some cops were confiscating his Mickey Mouse ping pong ball gun. We almost wet ourselves laughing right up until my buddy's carry-on luggage was checked and they found the foam nunchucks and plastic sword he bought at a night market. We stopped laughing FAST!
It has nothing to do with passenger safety, but all with conditioning and pavlovian training of the public to relinquish their privacy and bow to every 'authority'. These security people are programmed too, because terrorist are everywhere! Lies, big lies, Statistics come to mind.
Indignation and will for privacy are already a rarity amongst the young, they post everything on the web, never considering abuse of all that data and knowledge a third party has over you. People have been fired for things posted on the web, and I expect that today's governments, agencies happily keep track of everybody. - Guilty until proven innocent - With some handy software, and huge funds for 'national security' / War on Terror etc. it is easy to store a track record.
You think You are innocent, so thought Herbert, but in fact most people break many laws and regulation policies during a day, knowingly, but mostly unknowingly.
Government isn't nice, it's brute force.

I wish it was just a theory, or just a paranoid thought or nightmare, but I know too many close friends having bad personal experiences with DUTCH authorities. You know the hyper liberal country where you can buy pot in stores? The police state is growing here too. With cops using the 'papers please' to double the fine they give you for a broken light, trying to keep up with their fine quota's.
And then you read the books of the 'movers and shakers' like Charles Galton Darwin's "The Next Million years" and see his 1952' wish-list has become todays' reality. Aldous Huxly, wrote "Brave New World", describing cloning, designer classes of people and much more in ... 1932. Did he have a crystal ball? or good connections? hint: find out what Julian Huxley was into. Another good book is "The First Global revolution" by "the Club of Rome", read page 70 to 75, and understand 'global warming' (recently renamed to climate change) in a whole different perspective.
Many Jews and other so-called "undesirables" didn't believe what happened to them in Nazi Germany, even when they saw a previous group before their eyes being shot. They remained in denial and did not attempt to escape or fight the handful of soldiers ordering them to run to their graves.
It's your choice.

I did actually read that. Well not the whole book of course, not with my attention span. Just googled the GPL book and read pages 70-75. Wow, that is some deep stuff in there.
Then I saw this video

And read that passage again, but this time, I replaced "mankind" and "humans" with "beekind" and "bees" and just went "whoa".
After that it got a little silly with me imagining giant space hornets...
I too suspect it is more to do with establishing dominance and control. Perhaps making it clear to onlookers & suspects that folk are expected to obey the law & toe the line. It also gives them an opportunity to go through all your gear, looking for other contraband & perhaps gathering intelligence. There is much to be said for law & order in a free society but getting the balance right can be difficult.
