I've been fishing Long Island all my life and have finally decided to get in the water. This summer I visited a friend who lives close to key west and had my first introduction to spearfishing/ free-diving. I couldn't get down very deep and didn't get to shoot a fish but still had a blast. I did really well on the rod&reel though. They also did some tank diving/spearfishing, which as much as I wanted to, didn't go because I'm not certified.
Anyway got back to Long Island (unwillingly) and immediately signed up for a PADI class. I just finished the classroom (online for me) portion and am hoping to get into the pool sessions within the next couple weeks.
Also the other day me and a friend attempted to get some fish on our new mako polespears, and failed mostly because the visibility was like 2 feet haha. Did see some short fluke though and had a successful day fishing after that. Hoping to try somewhere on the North Shore in a couple weeks after I get a wetsuit.
Thats about my diving experience so far, which isn't much. Hopefully my intro didn't bore you guys too much. Now off to read some of the begginner spearfishing/scuba threads you guys offer!
