Hi everybody! I just got into spearfishing and freediving this last summer. Hunting and fishing are my two biggest passions, and I've been fishing ever since i could walk. I'm not entirely sure how i got into spearfishing and freediving, but I decided i wanted to try, so i spent countless hours researching online and i ended up buying a wetsuit and scrounging up all the gear i needed to go. I also purchased a polespear and, to the reluctance of my mom, dove for the first time in Morro Bay. I was instantly addicted to this incredible sport, and got one surfperch that day. I dove a few days in a row in Mission bay and La Jolla during our vacation last summer, and i also dove a few weeks ago again in Morro Bay. I'm currently almost finished with a speargun i decided to build out of (please don't judge too hard) pine wood. I know pines not the best, but all together its only cost me about $30, and if anything, I learned a LOT about woodwork, metalwork, trigger mechanisms, and spearguns. So that's me, 17 year old senior in high school with a newfound love of the ocean.

Welcome to Deeperblue! I know what you mean about limited opportunities for diving. I lived in Fresno for most of my life.

Where did you dive in Morro Bay? I considered it for a dive site a few times, but it didn't seem like there were any good locations.

Feel free to post pics of your speargun or get some info from the Homemade/DIY subforum. Lots of folks here have built guns, with very good results.

Thank you for welcoming me BatRay! I dive just south of the rock itself, and there's usually ok viz, but there's a lot of boat traffic and a lot of people that fish there, so you have to be careful.
