Hi, just registered for this forum. Spent years in the water (on the surface) enjoying open water swimming and some snorkeling but now wanting to take the plunge (groan at the pun!) into diving and trying to figure out which discipline I want to do and then where to start.

I'm sure that I can learn a lot from experienced people on the forum.

Hi Ms Mer

stoked to see another convert, i prefer the hunt & collect style of freediving/spearfishing, however iam a PADI Scuba instructor and have witnessed some amazing dive sites around the world, Do you want blow bubbles and breath while submerged, or do you feel you would be more suited to learning freediving skills and having that feeling of oneness with the ocean environment. it matters not where you start, but more so where you end up !!!. Good Luck.

Hi gbispearman, thanks for the welcome.

To be honest I am keen on learning both - just not sure in which order. I certainly wish to be able to stay under longer so had initially just contemplated scuba as I thought freediving was something that was hard to learn and only for the William Truebridges amongst us. I also thought the two were mutually exclusive of each other, but in reading the forums on here I realise that's not the case and many people do both scuba and freediving. The point you make about feeling oneness with the ocean environment rings true for me and the appeal of freediving is that one can be as close to being a sea creature as is possible. While I love my swimming and snorkeling, it's damn frustrating being on the surface when where I want to be is down there with the fishes! This was made all the more frustrating when I snorkeled at Goat Island 2 yrs ago and had divers going past underneath me. That was the point that I realised I needed to learn to dive!
