So I live on a boat in Miami Florida. In the last week I've lost an outboard motor and two anchors to the sea in the Anchorage. Even before that I've been wanting to get into Diving for cool stuff lost Around the bay and to be with the wildlife. No it is an economic necessity! I need my motor back and I need it before corrosion destroys it completely.

So I read up on free diving I've got a wetsuit snorkel fins 4 pounds worth of lead weights with the belt 220 lumen flashlight and I'm ready to go

update I finished writing this thread tonight after practicing with my new equipment today it was OK I found it pretty hard to stay down for a long time found some leakage into my mask well I got to the pressure of 1015 feet I'm using 3 pounds on my bill but wonder if maybe I should use four. Visibility was pretty bad today it'll probably be even worse where I lost my motor tomorrow. Also found it difficult to equalize even using techniques shown to meet pressure is always been a huge problem for me even in swimming pools of 3 to 4 feet deep at times In my life. When I try to equalize a ton of salt water seems to drain into my ear sinuses and down into my throat any advice on that?

Hi, I recommend that you check out the Beginner Freediving subforum for some basic diving tips. It's best to dive with a buddy if possible.

Any idea of the depths you're looking to achieve?

If you float up when you stop moving and don't hold on to something, you need more weight. For searching, you need to be neutral on the bottom. Most people would need more than 3 lbs in 10 ft of water, 4 or 5 is closer, maybe more. Alternatively, exhale a little. Get neutral, relax and you should have little trouble doing a minute on the bottom, take 3 minutes on the surface between long dives and don't hyperventilate.

I don't know all of the details of your diving situation, but usually when I am freediving for anything, abalone, spearfishing, etc I have always used at least 15 lbs on my belt. Hope this helps!
