Hi I'm Brodie live in Australia, new to the idea of spear fishing so will be asking heaps of questions, I'm about to do a dive course,
My first question is when buying fins I notice there is shorter open heal fins and enclosed longer fins, I will be also diving from a hooker and notice most of the divers around here that dive of hookers use the shorter open heal, I guess my question is will the long enclosed flippers still be fine for tank and hooker diving and free diving? Or need to get two sets? Also I have a 2 peace 7mm wetsuit for diving but thinking of getting a 1 peace 3mm for free diving for more movement those that sound right? I'm going to start free diving with just getting some abalone in the shollow and as I get confident try some spear fishing

Hi and welcome
A full foot pocket fin is much better for free diving, short open heel fins are for scuba diving.
Fins are a very important piece of equipment for most spear fishermen and free divers, many folk start out with long flexible plastic or fiberglass fins and gradually progress to firmer more powerful even longer carbon fins but, that can depend on the objectives.

How warm are you with your 7mm? I can imagine pretty toasty. If you go from a 7mm two piece suit to a single 3mm, you'll freeze! In getting your confidence up (and enjoyment) in the water it's essential for you to be warm in the water. Although a 3mm will give you more movement it's pretty thin IMO, but I just might be a wuss! If you think you can handle it, go for it and also the water gets colder the deeper you go.
