Hi fishcake, I think I remember seeing someone else from Edinburgh post here not long ago, so have a look around. I'm based in the Lake District and have friends in Edinburgh, but I'm broke and I don't drive!

Thanks for the ideas and encouragement guys- much appreciated! I'm currently stumbling through a maze of kit choices -gara 3000 HF or LD? Cressi 5mm gloves or mares 5mm gloves? I could go on, but will spare you- I'm sure you have your own memories of staring at pixilated images of neoprene dive products, trying to imagine if they'll fit. Ok, I'm ready to re-focus...

Have you done a freediving course (AIDA 1 star, 2 star, etc) yet? If not, that's the first thing to spend money on - it is the single best investment you can make, and will probably save your life several times over! :thankyou
In my experience freedivers tend to be very helpful people, often willing to let you try their equipment and give all sorts of advice. Because internet sellers are often the only source for many products, the ability to try things on and/or get independent opinions before spending your money, is priceless.:friday
Taking a recognised course with an experienced and qualified instructor will bring you into contact with other freedivers with whom you can share experience - as well as getting that vital foundation for the rest of your freediving life. I travel about 3 hours each way just to get to an instructor for courses and pool sessions - and it is worth it 100% every time.

Yes I agree colinox. I was just composing a response and found myself waxing lyrical about the line in deeper dives and the blue background of the sea and the sun in the bubbles. But that response got lost in the ether, so lucky for you I'll not try and retype it. I was just saying that I too think that a course is a grea t way to start freediving and I did it tooo- I booked my AIDA ** and *** courses and did it in Dahab and now have been a freediver for nearly 6 weeks. I loved swim- oh- diving with the beautiful fish and coral gardens in warmish water. It was great and so glad I have that foundation in safety and theory-physiology and physics. I am sure thats the only way I achieved the things I did- it was a great introduction to freediving. I loved all (aprt from dynamic) diciplines as well as socialising with the marine life and sand and rocks. I want to g back and do the aida**** and work on deep dives too, they are addictive. So of course, I now know alot of excellent freedivers, but they are all sunning themselves in Dahab! It's great you have a club and instructor to go to, v. envious! I think I need to make freediving more popular round here so as to craft some buddies:fridaymaybe some wind powered hydro heaters for the lochs and some tropical fishees floating in and about,

fishcake no club here but a few friends of mine now dive as well. Aida ireland has been bandied about a bit with a few attempting to start it but we have never got off the ground. Hoping to do instructor course next year as i think thats whats needed to begin with. Did my 3 in Dahab and loved it were you with Lotta and Linda? or another school?

Wish my friends would jump in but they're land lubbers at the moment. I too would love to do an instructor course after I get more experience and am thinking 'freedive Scotland' club and must find ways to get others interested. Lotta and Linda couldn't match my dates, so I went with Blue Immersion, who have no dive centre as such- two instructors called Akim and Patrick from France. They were excellent in the water and theory teaching was pretty good too. I aim to do their masters course for 6 weeks this year, which includes aida**** and is intended to build plenty of experience in the water and in a teaching capacity, it will also cover training and procedures for competitive freediving. Not sure where the best place for instructor course is though.

I think I read ages ago on this site about some spearfishers in Aberdeen- I hope you have a thick wetsuit! I have sidelined my Scottish freediving plans and will be going back to Dahab to dive- but let me know if you plan any scottish excursions, I could be persuaded and I have met a Corsican freediver in Edinburgh who is considering purchasing a very thick suit.

I have noticed the spear fishing posts in this forum in the past but have only recently passed my 2&3star AIDA in December 09..... i'm looking for someone to free dive with but living in Aberdeen doesn't make it easy.
i have a car,free every weekend and willing to drive anywhere in Scotland (as long as i'm back at work in Aberdeen for Monday morning
i notice that saltfree have meets down near chepstow every month and easy jet do cheap flights from edinburgh/glasgow every Friday & sun....WINNER...
i did my training with lotta& Linda in Dahab which i see is a common theme thought this site and in my view cannot be beaten ..
