Hey there!

Firstly off; thanks for the great forum and invaluable info on both free diving and spearfishing.

I'm Daniel from Cape Town (SA) and have been free diving, mainly for crayfish, for a few years. Started spearfishing more seriously during the last year or so.

Since I have been coming here quite frequently and reading various forum posts, I thought it would be my turn to contribute something (hopefully) useful to the DIY section.

Not really talented with my hands, but wanted to build a spearfishing platform to store my catch! The idea is not my own, as I have friends who use something similar, however I pimped it out a bit, by partially copying the banks board design. But perhaps something identical already exists on this forum?!

It's useful as it keeps the catch away from seals & sharks, increases diver vis with the alpha flag and allows me to store water, hat or other luxuries on the surface. Most importantly, it's cheap!

Basic materials were shade netting, which is pulled around the board and fastened with cable ties (this is the storage area for fish/other goodies + kit can be transported to an from the dive site in here), some elastic band, 1 extra leash plug for fish stringer, attachment, an L-bracket for a detachable alpha flag and 2m of simple back pack strap and lastly, a line winder to keep everything neat and tidy (can be used with a drop weight for anchoring or attached to the back of the gun). The only tools used were a screw driver to punch holes in the body board and scissors.

A picture tells a thousand words so have a look instead.

The fish is called Hottentot and pretty good eating (all well above legal size and bag limits were adhered to)

I know the board won't last forever like a real banks board possibly could, but it was a fun project and I am secretly looking forward to make another one!

Cheers,

greydog
