homemade gun trigger idea at bottom of thread

hey guys i just started spearguning and i have some stuff that i need to know about buiilding a gun. the first thing is i would like to make a trigger for my new spear gun without haveing to do the whole butterknife thing cause i cant understand it and cause the drawings that i saw on the flordia diver site were no =t very easy to unserstand for me. The type of trigger that i wanted to make was one that would relase the string. I have not seen any homemade guns that release the string is there a reason for this? and if anyone has any tips about makeing spears please respond to this thanks!!!

If you dont understand the drawings, it might be safer if you bought the trigger from one of the manufacturers that sell them seperatly such as Aimrite, Riffe, Totemsub or Abellan. They arent all that expensive and they are safer than not knowing what you are doing (like me :D I'm total crap)
Have a look as well for posts by Persiko, he has a link to his website with some pretty clear instructions on how to make one, only in Italian but hey you're from New York ;)

x Ali have you see the new doubleteakrubber?

LOL to fast for me mate ;)
Yes Ive seen it, it looks really good, how does it shoot? Mine is spot on, there is no difference in aim between single and double bands (except the recoil EEK!)

does anyone have very detailed design drawings fora homemadde because where i am i cant really get to any dive shops around me. i live inland and i cant find any shops so i figured that i would make one and there aint no better feelinging then owning a fishing with a gun u made urself.

I' am sorry, but I havn't drawings. But I can say: section my 90 (cm) is 4x3 cm total lenght is 130 cm. you can worg around this measurement.

x Ali the double is very stong!! shooting: the spear+ line (5 mt)+ 1 mt from reel........and have a very good control in every situation...so is my first gun.
in september i make the web page for this one, and for another gun whith a very special trigger mechanism named "innovation" by Ermes (you can see on my web site)
ciao good Holidays

ciao

thanks... i got an idea brewing in my head if anyone here is shoots a real bow and arrow they will know what i am talking about. When you shoot most compound bows they use something called a trigger release now i have a an old trigger relase that i might mount to my gun to use as a relase they are reliable i know for a fact because they hold up to a hundreed ounds of pressure(well thats how much my one was used for) i willl mount it to the top of my gun useing hose clamps(but lareger ones of course becuase my gun is made out of 2 1by3's) post back if you have any suggestions

Alison makes good sense when she suggests not making a trigger if you don't quite understand exactly how it works.

A great alternative...

There's a very slick and simple type of speargun called a Hawaiian Sling. They're capable of taking very large fish and work really well on the typical reef fish that most people shoot for the dinner table. You actually shoot this type of speargun much like a bow and arrow so you'd probably really like that style of speargun.

A Hawaiian Sling would make a great first speargun project. I may soon build one for myself just to keep in my vehicle for those spur of the moment spearfishing opportunities.

:)

Hi SpearGuy, if you look at my post

[ame="http://forums.deeperblue.net/showthread.php?t=62817"]My first homemade speargun![/ame]

there are some photos and a schematic of my trigger mech. It is by far the easiest/simplist to make and understand. Suprisingly it is really light and quiet to shoot as well. I am using a 17mm band on a 90cm barrel and this is more than strong enough. The diagram of the trigger is not the dimensions used- the actual spear has a 6mm notch, and the coresponding trigger catch is 5mm long. The metal is 5mm thick so it has a fair amount of material there for strength. It doesnt release the line, but you can add on a small catch underneath as on many production guns- less to go wrong or clog with sand!
Hope this helps.
Ross.
