I've got a cold at the moment. Best time to have it as there's no diving to be done 'til the sea clears up a bit. I've been drinking rum punch to this recipe:- Pour a can of "scrumpyjack" (strong cider) into a pan with a quartered orange, a couple of bits of cinnamon bark, some cloves and some sliced up ginger root. Simmer it for a while then pour some over some rum and drink.
It's nice enough but I realize this is a very crude recipe and would like to hear any better ones. A Jamaican friend used to make some with molasses or something like that in it:p. Anyone got any molasses recipes?

PS. anyone know any UK or Irish sites to buy overproof rum like "Stroh's Inlander" or "Woods Navy" in 80 by volume strengths?

If you are looking or a sore throat easer? Then you need honey, sugar, water & spirit!
Makes sense - heat water sugar & honey to make a sticky syrup, add spirit, about one finger, & sip hot...
If you want to drink more then boil off the alcohol first but to get the medicinal affect add spirit to hot syrup.

I'm looking for something to ease the throat, cheer the spirits, and taste great too. That's why I boiled up the spices with the cider then added the rum at the last minute.
Here in West Cork the way to make hot punch is to cut a slice of lemon, stud it with cloves and put it in a glass or cup with a good slug of poteen then top up with boiling water from the kettle. Add sugar to taste. If you're unlucky enough to have no poteen then whisky will do. You can buy a hot whisky like this in any bar. At home I drink them with honey instead of sugar.
