Hi, I'm Zack, I'm from Canada, and I want to start freediving. I would love to freedive, but there's one problem, I'm terrible at holding my breath. I can hold my breath for 1:15 above water, but underwater I can only hold my breath between 40 and 50 seconds. I need advice on how I can hold my breath for over 2 minutes underwater by the end of summer. Hopefully someone can help me out, and teach me how to hold my breath for a longer period of time!

Also I was wondering if anybody knows if there are any FreeDiving courses in Southern Ontario, Canada?

Thanks!
~ Zack

Hi Zack, Read the "How to start freediving thread" and search through the forums - there is some great info there. Try posting a message in the USA/Canada forum, you will likely find people in your area there. Contact local live shops and ask about freediving courses. Do a course/find a group to learn through, that way you don't take any unnecessary risks on your own.

Hi Zack,

You should get in touch with the Toronto Freediving Club

FreediveToronto

They hold basic courses and have training & practices weekly.

you can send a message to info@freedivetoronto.com

Also, the Canadian Indoor Nationals are going to be held in Toronto this month. Might be fun if you could make it out as a spectator.

I would suggest

- safety: get a partner who you know to be reliable and who would be looking after you, that way you will feel more comfortable reaching out your limits
- equipment: good nose clip, to prevent air leaving or water flooding. Good neoprene suit if you can relax well if getting a bit cold.
- with all the above, you can start relaxing more and improving.

oh come on. You can hold your breath for 2 minutes right now, if someone points a gun against your head. You can learn to ignore pain very fast, but you sure be close to disaster. Go-getting attitude is weeded out in this sport naturally and relatively painlessly.
