I realized recently, that all my spears are hawaiian style,(barb on bottom) this seems bad. The toggle hangs down. I bought some pins to flip toggles over but i am not sure how to attach them. Do I smash them with a hammer or a vise? vise grip pliers? anybody done this before? HELP

how do i squash the toggle pin?

Why do you think that is bad? I prefer the Hawaiian over the Tahitian. Anyway put the new pin in and cut it off about 1mm clear, then carefully mushroom the end with a small hammer with many gentle taps moving in a circular way around the pin at a slight angle until it is secure but still loose. Then just use a pair of pliers to tune the floper
I use both hawaiian and tahitian. Advantage of tahitian: it stays in place. Advantage of hawaian: works like an airplane's flap and helps with accuracy (according to a controversial ballistic theory).
In any case, don't go mad about it, you don't have to flip anything, just use one of those small o-rings made for purpose to keep the flopper in place.

You sound like you may well be giving as many HMMMMMs to that as me rofl
I don't like using an O ring, it's just one more thing to do, I am very lazy
I also don't like seeing my flopper (the one on my spear) sticking up like an excited adolescent schoolboy rofl hence Hawaiian shafts on my guns 
I dont know about any ballistic theory, but logic tells me that if i am trying to be silent as possible upon release, then tahitian is better. If my tip is hanging down, the first thing that has to happen upon release is the flopper gets pushed back against the spear from the force of the water anyway. Making an inevitable click sound , and possibly throwing my shot off, ( I have a single toggle so symetry is an issue) basically i want my tip streamlined with the spear , and i am in the same boat as "PASTOR" i dont want any o-rings ,(i got enough stuff) thanx for info on mushrooming pins YOU GUYS RULE!!!!
