How hard to push into contractions?

Another newbie question from me ;o)

Got into a new set of contractions for me doing dry statics – big contractions across a load of muscles. These were new to me as I’d never held for long enough to find them before.

My question is if the contraction sensations I experience doing dry statics can relate at all to dynamics in water?

What I mean is, I was totally conscious during these heavy (for me at least) contractions and recovered quickly after the static, is it OK or insane to push on a dynamic in water until I reach the same level of contractions?

Are the disciplines too different to allow me to relate experience of sensations from one to the other? Muscle use, and respiration are completely different of course, so does that make this sensation unreliable for use on swims in water?

Just trying to work out if I can use this new experience as a measure of where I am in my breath hold all the time?

Thanks

Gav

Hi Gav, contractions are smoother and easier to absorb in wet rather than in dry statics because muscles are more relaxed and dive response activates faster.

I think you may experience heavy contractions in dynamics as well as in statics. In dynamiics contractions start earlier. For me they start at about 1/3 of my max while in static they start at about 1/2 of my max.

In static you may endure the contractions for a longer time ofcourse as you are motionless and more in control; you may end the dive by just lifting your head. So in static my contractions get to be quite harder and more intense than in dynamic.

In both cases, however, contractions are harder to bear at their early stage and become more bearable towards the end of the dive.

I think over all this may mean I soon have more and dynamic distance in me (if I happen to be similar with starting at 30% & 50%).

So far I have surfaced in dynamics before anything like the big contractions I had the other night in dry statics - big urge to breath but not massive body contractions.

Think a concern over samba, and the big mental urge to breath has brought me up before "the end of my dive". I've certainly not had contractions reduce after being strong so far.

Perhaps it's time to start small pushes next year and see what happens meter by meter, 10 seconds by 10 seconds..............Just got to get some mental strength and relaxtion in order for it.

Thanks

yes, would think so, the strong urge to breath comes to me quite early at around 60m in dynamics... if u manage to endure that stage, then you can go much much further - for me around 160m. Just be careful, as u say, to advance slowly and with a spotter

and as the new zealand experts have mentioned in another thread, an australian saying comes in play here - you need to HTFU! :-)

i would say if you increase your breath-hold it doesn't mean that your performance in dyn will increase as well, but if you improve the hydrodynamic technic your performance will increase for sure

enjoy
