I know that good sense states that using the Buddy system is best, and I do dive with a buddy a lot of the time, however, there are occasions when I dive alone. I know the area well always phone in with the coast guard, and operate within safe limits. There is concept called self relience I adhere to, I would much prefer to dive alone that with a buddy who was unsure.

just my thoughts

Although we hunt together its never that close so I guess you are right in a sense about the safety aspect although we do tend to know where each of us are in the water and can keep a general eye out.

I tend to know where my buddies are and keep a general eye out, but I don't kid myself that this is a buddy system. If a buddy didn't come up from a dive due to a tangle or SWB, I wouldn't notice or be close enough to help.

I guess you’re right we do dive alone as the only time I truly know where my buddy is is when we’re scoffing at burger king on the way home.
I’ll change my vote in the poll right know.

I've hunted alone for some 20 years until the last 12 months or so. For a buddy to be of moderate use they would have to be on top of you just like when freediving. This is never going to be a good mix when hunting easily spooked fish such as bass. There is the argument that even if you have a buddy some 100 yards away at least they can raise the alarm if you get into trouble, but I think that in most cases by the time they got to you it would be to late anyway.
