Hey, I haven't been here in a long time. My family and I are taking a vacation in Key Largo over Christmas break. I'm taking my freedive gear and plan on doing some spearfishing and bug hunting (and maybe some treasure hunting). I want to use my hand spear that I made myself, but I also want to buy a good speargun, preferably a nice teak one. What species of fish are the easiest to find and/or catch? What is the law on spearing sharks? Any other info would be appreciated as well. Thanks!

Most of Key Largo is surrounded by Pennekamp Park which is a protected area and you absolutely cannot spear there. You can try your luck south of Long Key or 3 miles offshore south of the Pennekamp park (Tavernier area). You need a boat and some local knowledge. Look for patch reefs (shallow spots with reefs from 5 to 30 fsw). I would recommend checking out the Florida spearfishing regs (species, limits, sizes, etc) and getting a licence before you get there. Check out http://www.floridasportsman.com/regs/

ive speared in little torch key area...most common fish you will see are snappers (mangrove, mutton, cubera?), some hogfish, barracuda everywhere (watch out for ciguatera!), and grouper, but check up on teh regs...florida has strict and picky size limits on fish, grouper esp, some with max size limits. make sure youve got your float set up with a flag, florida law requires it...and why on earth would you be wanting to spear sharks in florida? nothing really edible there, why waste a beautiful creature?

a few ideas

sharks are illegal to spear. Drop by www.spearboard.com and use the search feature to help awnser specific questions, there are a bunch of florida spearfishers on the site and this type of questions come up all the time. About the teak gun, whats your budget? I am partail to the riffe comp series. there are better guns however but they are$$$$, there are some better priced ones that also get the job done. its really a matter of taste.
hope this helps a bit
