Ireland spearing 2010

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Went out west with the missus yesterday afternoon.
Dropped the sprogs off at the in laws and then hit the local strand. It looked a bit choppy so I set off to a east facing front I saw on the maps the night before. When we got there is was like glass ;)
As I was walking in about 3 inches of water I stood on a small flat fish... great start I thought ;)
We jumped in with our new gear I had the rubber belt that made a HUGE difference, the missus had her 5.5mm suit... a step up from her 3mm shorty from lidl. And I had my new float http://www.scubastore.com/images/products/media/imersion_09419.jpg which was great to carry the gear but did get annoying with the line getting tangled!! but it did allow us to take a little picnic!

vis was 5-10m and it seemed pretty warm. the area was lovely and we spent 1.5hrs just snorkelling around! I have no doubt that this is a serious fish spot but maybe we just hit it at the wrong time! Plenty of crabs and wrasse but I already have one in the freezer.

As we were snorkelling we were heading out to the headland, we reached there and were suddenly engulfed by minnows, which kept getting thicker and thicker. We sat on some rocks near the surface and had a little picnic and then we say big fish jumping a little offshore. I grabbed me gear and headed for there, opting to pull myself around hte headland as opposed to finning, I got the fright of my life when I stumbled on 4 MASSIVE bass. They split up and I followed them and they did a loop of the headland (which was now covered with the rising tide) and I ended back at the picnic spot, but when I got there I saw dark forms down below a little off the headland in the weed. I took a few dives and saw that there were quite a few pollock down there. I abandoned the bass and went looking for pollock and had some great fun catching them. I was underweighted for that depth so I had limited success. I even saw a flattie swimming with them and shot it. The missus was getting cold so we headed back in and when I got out we saw some action in about 18inches of water near the shoreline, so I hoped in and shot this mullet. Made for a great tea of fresh fish fingers.

The missus took one shot and missed with the polespear and she managed to loose my screw on paralyser tip :(

The catch, minus a few for the inlaws for babysitting

And some nice mullet fish fingers for tea ;)

I dive near Kilmore Quay, yes 21c or so my timex helix says....it did feel pretty warm too, I was in for 1.5 hours and could have easily stayed longer in my 5mm suit. The deepest water I was in was 1.5 metres (thats where the bass was) and the flatties were in 0.5-1 metre of water just 3-4 metres from the shore. Do you think the watch could be wrong? not sure if it can be recal'ed, it was pretty cheap on ebay.

out tonight for quick swim... vis was great, bout 10+m but fish were all but gone. got nice flounder and 2 small pollock. forgot goodie bag and passed up a load of crabs and mussels!

im sure ull be in the water soon regan and putting us all to shame ;)

derek how do u find the helix? was looking for a cheap dive warch but the depth sample rate of 5 secs put me off.

Hi Bobdonny,
I bought it on ebay for $40 including the postage and had it in 4 days by standard USPS mail. No instructions but was easy to download the manual. Its a pretty basic dive watch but for the money is pretty usable. I just wanted a watch for depth and temperature and it does both. The depth guage/thermometer can be set to metric or imperial but does not activate automatically until you dive to 1.5m or more. I'll pm you the manual with all the details. If you're looking to buy one on ebay just make sure its the dive DM version or has Depth etched into the back casing...there are 3 different versions of this watch.

Had another bad day wednesday. re-tied my bungee line too tight and kept getting tangled when letting shots off as the bungee kept being pulled into the muzzle resulting in me missing a potential PB:rcard. anyway came away with a 5.5lb bass after missing 3 others point blank. the suit is great, fits well and im happy with it.
Derek, the water around cork is 12-14 degrees and never goes above 16 at any time of year so 21 sounds very high indeed. sometime if not fully submerged they pick up the temp of direct sunlight. ive often seen mine reading 17 and 18.
If your getting a computer for just freediving get one with a freedive mode as they have faster sample times. I use the suunto mosquito which is nice and small. a better but more expensive and very popular one is the D3 also by suunto.
Workin late tonight rob so cant dive. looks good for it though, infact it looks too goodrofl

Hi Baldyfish, I've had mine a few weeks now and I've never seen it read below 17 with 18 being the average reading. I spend most of my time at the surface so its possible its picking up direct sunlight as well. I kind of thought 21 was a bit 'tropical' but my car was telling me land temp was 25 which is very high for this area as well. Anyway, I hope to get away early this afternoon in the interest of scientific research into this watch and while I'm at it...sure I might as well do a bit of spearing as well :t

got out for an hour today to a new spot (that makes 7 days spearing / diving in a row all over Cork + county ;) )

Immediately I realised this is a major bass spot.... but almost immediately got distracted by some small pollock. I followed them back out to the deep and came accross a large shoal, I spent a good 30 minutes in with them and managed 4 decent sized fish, I passed up many smaller waiting for a bigge that just failed to come or I failed to get :( there were some monsters in there, but I either couldnt dive the depth and stay with them and when I could I found the 75cm comanche just didnt have the distance :(

Vis was another amazing 15m, I really want a nice bass but the thrill of a decent pollock is too much to resist!

On the way home (wife and kids come to play on beach these days) I talked the missus into beer battered fish and chips, which means we had to stop off to get beer :) :) :) :)

Here are the fish and results ;)

Dammit Dave, that'd be a right buzz kill if I wasnt full on battered fish and beer ;)

But savage fish all the same!!!!! :inlove Fair play! Looking forward to the report!

When I was diving I saw some big fish but only 2 that I classed seperatly as "sunfish pollock" swimming in the distance... one day ;)

Edit: wow double figures... bet he put up some fight by the exit hole!

Aye, thanks baldyfish,:friday

Looking to come over and do a pub craw and dive before I get to old.
I'll be back with some of my local pics in a wee bit. I'm good friends with a guy named Gerry Mackey who used to own the local pub here. My friends band called the Feinians come over once a year to tour. I may have to crawl in the drum kit some day.
Cheers, Don Paul

Here's some south Cali...
