A Kerry fisherman who's boat is called the "Atlantic gem" who steams to cork to fish for bass has promised, and I quote "to wipe out the bass on the south coast". I've heard this from a very reliable source.
There is a meeting in Cobh this Saturday about the situation as it's getting out of hand. I think spearos should have a presence there so if anyone is interested let me know. I'll be going. It's to exchange numbers and info to other fishermen so hopefully we can put a stop to this. At the moment inland fisheries are supposed to be looking after bass but are denying their responsibilities so it looks like it's up to us.

"Atlantic Jem" I think you'll find, I sent ya on some more info. And only the skipper is from kerry... the owner is far closer to home.

Lets just say.... if you like Irish bass.... you may consider boycotting "Ballycotton Seafood"!!!!!!!!!

Ya my suspicions were correct about ballycotton seafood so. Reported them already for selling bass so obviously the money they make far outweighs the fines they get every year their reported.

I was actually really impressed with them 2 weeks ago when buying the salmon cos they were selling mullet....
I'd always try to give a local producer my business even if it costs me a little more.... but what a pack of thieving sum!
I asked the girl in the shop if the mullet was local and she said she didn't know (but knew the salmon was from a farm in the west) but now I realise that most likely the mullet was a bycatch.....

I bought the prawns I posted up from them too and found it strange they were selling mullet as they never did before.

Derekn. That's my brother and his girlfriend who dissected the whale with the help of local butchers! U can see them at 2:44 and 2:50.
He is a zoologist with the Irish whale and dolphin group and anytime a beaching occurs u can assure he is there, at his own expense.

I know I'm gonna get in trouble for this but sounds like more of a job for a 12 bore to the hull than a plackard !! Meant to post a link a few weeks ago but been really busy overheard on Joe Duffy commerical fishermen giving out about the bass ban saying they were just gonna land it in france !!

That's worrying about them landing in France. There going to have to catch way more to cover the diesel bill to steam that far. That's 100 times worse than landing here. Jesus you'd swear there were no other species out there.

Maybe for a small time netter... but if your an established complany.... with established distribution channel to france chances are there will be no extra overheads... sure there are already trucks going there with their other produce!

The amount of bass they are landing... there aren't enough buyers in ireland willing to take that risk... one or two bass, maybe.. but 18boxes? It was always going to france.

Its a disgrace but you are not the only ones suffering, we have the two 46mt Plymouth super trawlers in our waters.

They are hovering up every f...k thing around our west coast.

"Just out of interest, chatted to sea fish couple of days ago, they boarded the Wirons last week. They are after scad this time and doing about fifty ton a haul each.

They had two hundred and seventy five ton for their night!

They dont fish during the day, are clearing fish from the night.
Interesting point is between them and three 18 meter frog trawlers they had one million quids worth for their night. Apparently the new limit wont make any difference to the big dutch boats, they will still be able to fish there, the horse power limit I thought would have stopped them has been removed from law as apparently it was discriminatery (not a chance in hell of spelling that right). Another small thing what bass ive had from You Know Where this week have been stuffed with orange crabs, bit like a lady crab."
