I won't publish video about scallops anymore. It was 3 of us collecting scallops. About lobbies and crabs I said in above post that regret about it. I only wander why you can condemn us and earlier praise others for the same thing ? ...For a special occasion I will drive 4 hours for 12 scallops Why do you drive so far about 350 km and back for 12 scallops? It will cost you about 140 euro !!! In shop they are mach cheaper for special occasion then you spent for fuel ! Am I wrong ?

Same here regan. I take roughly 12-20 when I go and drive 2 hours to get there. I could take 100 but dont see the point. I have 30 relations on the island I live on and even more friends but they rarely get them. Just mammy

Even when we take this amount 2/3 times a year, over 2 years I've noticed a decline in numbers and now Im taking even less!!
I guess I'm more upset about flaunting quantity publicly as if there is endless supplies.
The mesh bag was STUFFED and over spilling. If the bag was bigger......would there have been 200 taken???

About the future, well... I'm might see in the horizon something in Beara Peninsula lads.. The water in Castletownbere is more than 18oC and always +10meters visibility, there are couple of places to stay, all kinds of fish could appear there, last year I saw there the amberjack and guilt heads are there for sure.
Mmmh that sounds very tempting and even worth the trip from Scotland
Choker. There is nothing like catching your own. U know what water they come from and they are fresh.
Just be careful in Ireland and check everything out before you take stuff and especially video it! I've a scalloping video where I filmed myself taking 3. No questions or trouble.
If u have questions on anything we rather people ask before rather than after. I'm glad u realise about undersize as a lot of people from outside Ireland take small thing without realising the limits and find out after about the limits. If everyone did this......well u know yourself man.

Seeing as I am am referenced in that post I will make a comment, yes we did take 70 scallops between the three of us, it was new years eve last year in hindsight perhaps it was a large haul. However I have not visited that spot since and do not plan too till this Christmas . I distributed my scallops amongst friends an

Ya it's gone a bit mad seahunter. The scallop has to be bigger than 100mm and can't be taken on scuba. No quantity limits are in place for freediving afaik which leaves people open to the "it's not illegal" argument.

I agree too with bob's post some very small lobbies I can't seem to find the video with the scallops though??, evaluating an area first is very important, I will hold up my hand and say yes I did take 3 wrasse home with me on Sunday. They were for my brother in law he grew up eating them and likes the taste, two were the biggest we could find and the other was a medium sized fish. Personally I took one ever before and didn't like it. The area there was teeming with them as Bob said, the highest numbers I have ever seen. I will not be taking anymore this year just merely doing a favour for someone who has given me mussels and scallops on many occassions.
I am neither proud or ashamed of my actions as they were not very difficult to shoot but my impact on the population will be negligible. Just wanted to be honest as there is alot of discusssion regarding wrasse at the moment.

I see thousands of wrasse,they are everywere,healthy population for many years to come.
I DONT SHOOT them though but i dont mind anyone having them for dinner and i dont either understand all the discussion about them.....

Lads I am not a moderator on here and this thread usually runs it self pretty well so from a personal point of view I think Choker made clear he made mistakes when he was begining to spear and has said he has learnt from this forum, great stuff. If 3 people take 100 or two people take 70 its a similar thing and both parties say they probably wont do it again so can we leave it at that or will Mart have to wield the hurl in here?
Was out today with Dan from UK got a nice pollock and mullet, there wasn't loads of pollock like I am tempted to say but viz was still good. Dan spotted a congor free swimming as well which I havent seen before either. Usually only seen them deeper on scuba holed up with just the head looking out. Like a twat I turned on my camera on the waters edge only to find the battery flat.

Ballan wrasse are a very slow growing inshore species that are in decline.
How many 6-7lb wrasse do you see?
We know they have potential to reach double figures in weight but I have not heard of any for many years!
The main issues however come from different angles ... small wrasse under 4lb are hardly worth the effort to clean & prepare for the table as the actual amount of flesh is a very poor ratio compared to other fish (they are all head & guts) & even then the flesh is made up of a strange consistency - when cooked it is not flakes of flesh but very small particles, a lots of folk would describe as mushy!
Wrasse inhabit shallow inshore areas in the summer months, they are not found in deep water (only occasionly) so what you are seeing is a large percentage of the locale stock unlike say, bass that are distributed all over the ocean at any one time!
Wrasse are very territorial & this makes them susceptible to overfishing however unlike virtually any other UK fish they are difficult to catch commercially due to the terrain they inhabit - Wrasse love shallow rocky, weedy areas - not easy to set nets or trawl up!
However they are susceptible to spearfishing .....I for one would not like to be responsible for decimating wrasse stocks, a 5lb wrasse is twenty years old or more.
We dont really know where they go in the winter but we assume into deeper water however they are not caught in any numbers so it remains largely a mystery.
Unfortunately these beautiful placid fish will become more targetable as other more desirable fish become more scarce.
Of course if shooting wrasse is what floats your boat ... then have fun!

Wow, things have changed here, are you spearfishing again feargus.
Foxfish that was a good explanation, best I've seen yet.
Got out for my 1st proper session last saturday, went to a place called cape schank. Had a great dive. Conditions are much different from Ireland, middle of winter and had 8m viz. There wasn't really much of a current put the swell shifts you around the place pretty hard and can be dodgy. I got smashed by a couple of rogue waves.
I took 1 squid which I was happy with because it's something I wanted to try, but I couldn't really target any fish. There is bag limits and legal sizes for most good eating fish so I was really just having a look and quizzing the spearo I was with on whats what. There is a lot of different fish species to learn off.
I'll post a few pics later. Hopefully will be getting out pretty regular now so I'll keep the reports coming. The comps start in October so have to get the practice in.

Forgot to say I seen 4 port Jackson sharks(harmless). Pretty cool seeing them without a glass screen in front of me. They were just sitting under a big ledge sleeping during the day.
