By Cork it will be a bit faster and shorter, I always remember this after crossing Killarney in summertime...

This link should give you the prices Pedro Hungry Hill Lodge Hostel in Beara, Ireland, Europe €22 a night to stay in what looks like a nice place with a bar and shop sounds good to me. Plus the people who wish to camp also seem to be well catered for, I think your right we will just keep going till we get there.

Count me in too lads. I am an hour and a half away so I will be coming early Saturday morning. We can go for a morning dip until all the lads arrive. Hostel looks nice.
U might as well come the cork way. Killarney is buzy enough at the moment with tourists. Most probably I will be camping for the night.

Everybody is more than wellcome, from forum user to friends of forum users, conditions are excellent for all spearo levels, visibility is usually outstanding (+10/15 meters usually).

This get together sounds great and should be enjoyed by all.
However I just spotted all the fighting talk......I personally would prefer not to see this kind of competition taking place! You want to compete take up hurling, golf, boxing or even Kendo.
I'm no conservationist but I'd hate to see 10 guys getting out of the water
laden with fish that won't be eaten on the day (all going well) The water is there to be enjoyed and we are its keepers. Its not a farm that we give and take, we put in nothing and therefore need to show it respect.
These things start small, but in a few years if these gatherings become the great hunt that they used to be in the old days they will be traveling from far and abroad to all the spots you are posting here.
If you were to have a competition choose a fish on the day and exclude others and have a maximum number of fish to be shot each!
And make sure the winner gets to buy the beer!
If it wasn't a competition I would be happy to be part of these gatherings I know of others that would be too.
But alas I can not give this kind of potential turkey shoot my blessing and feel strongly that this has the potential of going pear shaped and work against all of us in the long run.
Enjoy the water and have a great time. Try and look around once in a wile aim and don't take the shot.....

Hang on. It's not a comp dirk nor was the Sligo one. I meant to stress it to the lads when I heard comp bein mentioned. It's not a comp it's only a meet. I only take wat I will eat or bring home.
I think it's all the testosterone has got to the lads and a promise of a t shirt.
It's gonna be low key in the hostel too. No waving guns around. I go here every year and plan to for years to come.

Personally I am going for the fun. Who mentioned competition anyway? I am looking forward to meet other people and to check the beauties of the Beara.
I might have a few beers too....!!
Well I might also pull the trigger for a fish or two.
I agree with what u said dirk but I think it is a meeting that was long due and not an All Ireland Spearfishing Competition

Btw I totally agree with dirk. Just want to highlight the fact that on our last meet every bit of fish was consumed bar half a 2lb pollock which the foxes got. Nothing wasted and hopefully no waste this weekend. Would love to see u there dirk.
I'm holding out to taste another trigger and a lobbie/crab would be nice too.

I never seen any mention of a "competition" apart from someone from one of the UK threads asking what the rules were. Pedro replied there were no rules or competition that it was merely a get together in the slim hope of maybe seeing some of the more unusual fish that visit our shores.
In Sligo all the fish landed on Saturday were enjoyed together that night apart from Rob's pollack which was used for breakfast the following morning. I suspect that maybe the banter involved could give a misguided impression of the purpose of this weekends trip. I have seen the pictures and read the articles from the competition's of old and I would never wish to return to such times.
However nice one of Feargus's t-shirts may be I for one will not be driving for 12hours round trip just in the hope of winning one! I did offer a very nice bottle of wine to anyone who lands a John Dory or Gurnard as these are my favourite fish of all to eat . I'm sure everyone is on the same page but if anyone feels there should be a limit of only 2 fish from a species per day or other such limits I have no problems. I hope you will join us Dirk perhaps meeting face to face would help ease your concerns you never know you might make some new friends and enjoy the banter.!

Hi Dirkjan, first of all thank you for posting your concerns, as more as I read it as more I was identifying myself with, althought never using the competion expression, despite the fact that in other circunstances I´ve made myself competion back in Portugal... That´s a really really interesting subject that I would love to talk about, or in this forum, or live, as I did previous in schools, associations and maritime reserves forums (check "Berlenga", it´s in from of my hometown "Peniche", city that will host in 2 weeks time the 2011 Euro-African Spearfishing championships, probably the most important event apart from the world championships that we´ve also organized previously) regarding fisheries and spearfishing impacts in ecosystems, and yes, in all this forums we, spearos, should feel that we are ahead, why? Because we see the sea in a sea perspective, not from a boat or a cliff, we play with sea roles because we are a true part of it, because you and me can see underwater, lost lines, fishing boays, cages, fishing weights, nets, etc.
This is the main objective for me this meetings, as some of you already know, so please, feel free to join us, your opinion and true sea keeper presence will be more than wellcome amoung all other keepers that feel and respect the Ocean as the Ocean should be watched.

hey dirk howyah, I hope the lads have allayed your justified fears somewhat. It was something I was very concious of having the lads down in mullaghmore. The event was invitation only as I didnt want 6 or 7 lads spearing the most wrasse they could get and brandishing guns about. I think (1) spearfishing is devloping whether we want it to or not and (2) we can direct it somewhat. The peer pressure at the both meetings was not to have a load of fosh or anything too small even if legal. A dive shop I know in Dublin is starting to look at stocking freedive gear and spearfish gear. I am starting to sell both on our website but have limited experience on spearing. I have a section above the spearfish where I lay out what should happen Spearfishing but am open to anything you guys want added there but the last line is the most important I think. If some of the new guys take away the unwritten rules or code of conduct from the old guard then its a good thing. The t shirt is only for the crack and is meant to be given to whoever is voted for by the rest of the crew. So it can be given for most stylish camo pattern if ye want lads. Bob got it for biggest pollock caught, not for amount of fish caught etc. I know most of the lads let go pollock they saw that were too small for obvious reasons.
Johnny was so conservative he stayed to a diet of lobsters.
