Hi, I was out this Sunday and it was lovely. Great visibility, water very calm, temp 14-15 very surprising.
Got a few Pollock in good sizes. No sign of Bass unfortunately.
I had close adventure with massive seal for a few minutes - scary stuff

Hi guys, i am member of one Lithuania sperfishing club, 2 days ago i move to Ireland. I live in Tallaght right now. I have all my spearfishing equipment, and i want to start hunting somewhere around. Could someone briefly describe the rules? Do I need a permit, or in the see dont need a permition? sorry if i wrote not in the topic
Welcome to DB, No permit is required for spearfishing if you are using a banded speargun, pnuematic guns are not illegal but are considered firearms and require a license which may or may not be granted on application to the local police. Your local firearms police officer will probably have no idea of the legislation and you could be in for a lengthy wait, so its probably easier to stick with a rubber banded gun.
It is illegal to spear in rivers, lakes and inland waterways. Hunting in the sea while freediving is ok and most fish species are allowed with the exception of Sea Trout and Salmon. A bag limit of 2 Bass per 24 hour period is also in force and there is a closed season from 15 May to 15 June each year, minimum size for a legal bass is 40cm.
Hunting for crustaceans (crab and lobster) as well as shellfish is allowed while freediving but not on scuba and confiscation of all your equipment and car is possible. Spearfishing on scuba is not illegal but it is severely frowned on by spearos and scuba divers alike in Ireland, also we try to keep our spearing on a low profile.
Some anglers and commercial fishermen do not appreciate spearos and can become threatening and aggressive, usually due to ignorance of the sport but also to some spearos being greedy and taking too many or too small fish. The general rule we try and practice is conservation, only taking enough for our table and varying the species that we hunt.
Have a look through past posts for more information but remember to take care when you are out there fishing, try and get some local knowledge if you are going to swim in an area you are not familiar with, there may be hazards like strong currents or boat traffic.

Weather is looking bad for cork this weekend. I don't think it's wise diving in bad weather. Especially in Ireland.

I've been diving in Beara this Tuesday...in the place that you all know basicly Unfortunatly the conditions were a bit... wild... really big waves and a bit more current than usual. I arrived in late afternoon so only had 1 hour of visibility and the water visibility was around 2 meters and half. In the next day I didn't risk, conditions were even worst and a bit dangerous as well. Got 2 dogfish and a spider crab. I saw few pollock, all small and on the way back I took a look over the south part of the peninsula, and the conditions were a bit better, maybe around 3 to 5 meters visibility (watched from the surface). From Agridole hrb untill almost the cable car area, water is much better, almost no waves and good visibility, so that's basicly my report

I've had a busy summer with salmon and seatrout fishing, a young lurcher to train and young ferrets to handle and play with as much as possible. Today the weather didn't seem good - too wet for ferreting ( my locator malfunctions in wet weather), too rough for diving, the salmon seasons over and the seatrout seem to have stopped coming up the river now. I was going to have a lazy day then at 11.30 I couldn't sit still any longer so I threw the gear in the car and headed off to look for scallops.
Low tide was before 10.00 so I was dead late already. I arrived at 12.30 to find a bit of wave but nothing too bad and vis was actually quite good! Un fortunately I'd forgotten my socks and gloves in the rush so I had to tough it out without them.:martialI swam out and found a nice area of sandy patches in rough ground at 12 to 15 metres and it didn't take long to get a few. I wanted 12, that would be 4 for me and 8 to give to my son and daughter in law but having forgotten my catch bag 11 was all I could cram and balance on my float.
On the swim back I stopped to look at fish on some rocks. Plenty of small pollack to 3lbs or so and small wrasse then I saw a trigger dart into the boulders. When I went down for a look there were more than one hiding there. I marked the spot by leaving my float anchored and swam back to the car to fetch a speargun. I got 2 and left the others.
I must say I've lost my water fitness as I was shivering when I got back and I'd only been in a couple of hours. I must start getting out at least once a week through winter so My body learns to keep warm again.
