Ireland Spearing, 2011

Had good vis last Tuesday in Sligo about 5-6m but most of the fish seem to have gone deep. Wasn't hanging around long as had a few students but saw only wrasse. If any of you guys are in Dublin I am at the toys for big boys with Adventure Sligo. Then courses in Galway, Dublin and Cork. Cork and Dub nearly full but plenty of space in Galway yet if you know of anyone.

I have next sat booked off for a scallop dive / investigation of some new sites.... weather looks kak but I'll go for a dive anyway if anyone is around!!

Afraid not, even with the good weather the water resembles something you might leave in the bowl after a feed of Guinness and a Balti Curry. Still seems to be a lot of land water draining in to the sea down this way.

we are so "active" this this year , with "help" of weather ..... on other hand , fish stock for next year will be tripled .. ( hopefully )

I'm looking at upgrading my gun to something decent as it is just a cheap Seac I bought as was'nt sure I would keep up the sport.
Currently I use a 75cm but was looking at this:
Cressi Geronimo Elite. Spear guns Spear guns, Scubastore.com, buy, offers, dive

what do you think.

Hi chealy, looks like a nice gun, but the spear shown has fins/tabs on it, and an articulated wishbone is rigged; not sure how those two work together... Might need to change the wishbone to dyneema?

At that length, have you considered a wooden gun, extra mass, less recoil...

Geronimo would be a great gun in an 85cm!!!
I think the spear is standard Johnny, thats actually the line realease mech I think!

Cressi is a great gun only second to Rob allen in my opinion... but then I would say that right

I'm no expert but a few thoughts that I would consider on the new gun:

1) 75cm is probably the ideal size for hunting bass and other fish in the kelp and rocky areas, the Cressi sizes for that gun are 85-115cm
2) The Muzzle has the option for two circular bands but its unlikely that you will need the extra band if shallow hunting for bass.
3) The bigger sizes would be better for hunting pollack, cod or other species swimming in open water but the viz is not often that great here.
4) The adjustable trigger could be nice to have, the trigger on my Seac Mini-Roller 75 is functional but feels a bit weak and plastic. It definitely has more range than my 75 XXV Gold but I didn't really get much chance to use it this year so the jury is still out.
5) I like having a reel on my guns but not everyone like the extra weight or drag.

Just a few thoughts...I haven't seen the gun or fired it, maybe some others on the forum will have some personal experience with it.

what size are u looking at ? most used in Ireland is 75 and it really works . first gun i got was 90 it was ok , but when u getting in to shallow waters and weeds , 90 is way to big.
other think - some 75 is only an inch smaller than 90 . for example mares carbon phanom 75 vs omer xxv 90 . very strange ...
I heard that Cressi elite is very good gun , but i only heard a rumours .

Cheers for all the replies,, I have been using the 75 this summer and had pretty good success with it so maybe I will stick with this size gun.
I wanted the reel just in case I head of on the holidays and decide to try my luck somewhere further afield.

Guess i'll have to wait and see what santa brings..

I was looking at the wooden guns awhile back in Indonesia as there was a guy out there who built them, they just look very bulky for the type of places I have been diving.

A 13m fin whale just washed up near me in raughly in Sligo so will be heading out to see it and will try and dig out the camera for a few shots. Would be great to see one of these guys in the ocean though.

OMG, imagine if it gaseously exploded when you were standing right there with yer hand on it! The stink that would come off the thing... :hungover

Any signs of people taking trophies/keep sakes from the whale carcass?
