been interesting reading your posts! Im heading over to the NW coast on the 14th May for two weeks holiday. i love ireland and have visited many times however ive only ever been surfing. started spearing a few years back and this time i'm going to take me kit. i would not ask for secret spots etc but would love to know if there are bass and mullet around on the North/NW coast and if anyone is spearing up that way?

no probs matt... as far as i know if you were to draw a line from galway bay to dublin the bass are all south of the line... plenty of pollack and mullet in north west though
Hi Matt where are you going to? I ma based in Sligo but am in Egypt from the 13th to 19th but back after that. If you need weights etc I can leave them somewhere for you if your flying. Mullaghmore isi usually a good spot and up in to Donegal, towards the west if the sea is calm then off to the right of Dunmorran strand but you need flat calm seas for access.
It was rainy with an east wind today but since I had some time this afternoon I decided to try for some pollack.
I chose to dive a big headland to try and get some shelter from the easterly swell. When I got there I could see white chop going east and some swell coming in too, from the south. I wanted to dive on a patch of broken ground, about half a mile from the shore so I started to swim out with the wind behind me and soon had swell pretty much coming from in front! The floatline was attached to a weight which was clipped to my belt so I could "drop anchor" regularly to check depth and current and dive to check for fish.
First dive was only 5 metres deep and no fish to be seen, but lots of sandeels. A good sign.
Next dive was six metres with a kelpy bottom and lots of small pollack.
A couple more dives and my land bearings were lining up and thick kelp with rocky ledges below me at 10 metres. The tactic was to drop into a gulley then rise slowly while looking over the ledges for fish. I spotted a few goodish ones but they were wary and with my low fitness, divetimes of a minute or less and poor sea conditions, all I could manage was a 3.5 pounder. I did take a long shot at a bigger one but missed. (It didn't even have the good manners to look scared).
After 25 dives I was shivering so I welcomed the swim back into a headwind as it got me warm again.:martial:martial:martial (Water temp was a chilly 9 degrees).
Not a big pollack but my first of the year and most welcome. It was good to see plenty of fish in my favourite pollack spot too!

Just out of interest, what size is the gun you're using? A 100?
Hi Bros, that's an HF 110 though it's 120cm from the barrel tip to trigger lock. I like it for the rock stumps and ridges in clear water as it's fairly accurate on long shots. I've been following your discussion on the new airgun though and I like the sound of that too.
I've often fancied an airgun for the range and lack of recoil but in the past the fat barrel obscured the spear a bit, making them tricky to aim. Maybe we'd best let Broseidon buy one and see how he does with it.rofl
