Have you been diving long? Scallop diving can be deep and dangerous?

Hey bobdonny and co . Thanks for straight response. I'm new to spearfishing and freediving. I can't say I'm absolutely new to freediving, just not much experience.
I've been diving for scallops few times in West Cork and Galway areas. Not really deep ~5-10 meters. Should mention I've never been diving deeper than 15m.

I've been reading this forum for some time and I find your community quite friendly

I'm afraid the scallop spots are sacred lads. I'll show u where the pollock are though.
Was looking at the photos agai regan. Your right about the scuba gear. Was on dives in the med from charter boats with loads of gear and two spearos were on the boat too but they freedived.

Thought u might want to see this programme on Chanel 4 @9pm next tues. It's called hidden talent. There going to train an average Joe to compete in a freediving comp. Looks good.

Hi all,
Back after a long absence. Keen to get a decent suit for this season and looking at Cressi World Competition 5mm or a Beuchat Marlin Prestige 5mm. There's surprisingly few reviews on these suits on db / internet. Someone previously asked question re. Beuchat Prestige with no answers in wetsuit threads. Most here seem to recommend Elios but I am trying to avoid open-cell. I need something relatively durable and easy-on....

Appreciate any experience / wisdom.

Back after a long absence. Keen to get a decent suit for this season and looking at Cressi World Competition 5mm or a Beuchat Marlin Prestige 5mm. There's surprisingly few reviews on these suits on db / internet. Someone previously asked question re. Beuchat Prestige with no answers in wetsuit threads. Most here seem to recommend Elios but I am trying to avoid open-cell. I need something relatively durable and easy-on....

I don't know about wisdom but my experience is with the Cressi World Comp 5mm and 7mm. I'm 5'6 and stocky so the medium suit fits me perfectly, during the summer months where sea temp is 16C give or take I can easily stay 4 hours and be quite comfortable in the 5mm suit. For winter I use the 7mm and have stayed in for over an hour with sea temp at 6C. Core body is still quite snug after this but the fingers and toes will be numb, guess I need thicker gloves and socks. I find the suits a bit difficult to put on when dry so I normally mix up a little warm soapy water in a bottle and pour it over me before I slip in to the suit. I find the 5mm suit very durable and it still looks like new after 2 years, I can't really compare it with anything else other than a surf suit which is 3/4mm and very flexible but unless its a very hot day I won't last more than an hour or two.

Thanks for your reply. The Cressi world comp seems to have a few reviews but none for the Beuchat. Im 180cm and slim (read skinny!) but was aiming at the medium based on length and other reviews which said this was a slim-fit suit...might check over this again. Still feel like I will come around to the Beuchat as I have a bit of money available, would just like to know that it's not wasted....cheers

I bought my 7mm medium from a guy who had gotten it and found it didn't fit him too good. He was only a little taller than me but he was of a very slim build. It fits me perfectly and is very toasty but as I said I'm a bit on the stocky side (read beer gut)

must be all that rich food your eating derek... lobster, bass and scallops... agree with foxfish on wetsuit...got one from spiros last yr and cannot recommend more highly... went in last january and didnt get a bit cold...

Mostly it's the custom fit but a mtm suit gives you some choice of materials and style too. Members on here have had Diveskins make double skinned suits but with open cell wrists and ankles to make good water seals.
Elios stock a mid density neoprene made by Heiwa. This doesn't compress like the normal low density stuff that most freediving suits are made from but with the custom fit it's still as warm as softer neoprene would be on an "off the peg".
You can choose whether to have knee and elbow patches too. I haven't tried Diveskin suits but can definately recommend Elios. The only drawback is that they take a while to come so order in advance.

I agree that Elios MTM suits are very good but I am not convinced they are worth the extra £80-100 however, if you are not on a budget then definitely go for a custom Elios.

do many of you dive around mayo? its days like this where i cant wait to get out, but konw one i know is around! us students seam to fan out at the weekends!! im new enough to this so wouldnt be big on the idea of going solo! need to make more contacts!

Following recent discussion I bought a bag of dillisk in Sligo last wknd feck me its salty ! Besides using as an aid to drink more beer wat else can I do wit it ? I tried shredding it and deep frying it Japanese style but it failed miserably !
